Rácalmás: Island Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Rácalmás
Rácalmás offers different perspectives on nature and history: its protected island landscape, themed trails and the architectural history of the Jankovich mansion. On Rácalmási Nagy-sziget, the landscape and its wildlife take centre stage; other tours lead to historical sights in Rácalmás. This combination can help you decide what you want to focus on during your stay when choosing a holiday apartment.

Island Nature and Information Along the Way
Since 1996, Rácalmási Nagy-sziget and the surrounding island landscape have been a nature reserve and part of Duna-Ipoly National Park. On the island, within the national park, a floodplain nature trail winds through the landscape. Alongside routes to historical sites, Rácalmás therefore also offers a nature trail with its own distinct focus.
Along the island’s forest paths, 17 stops with large, colourful information boards share insights into the area’s wildlife and history. Nature and local history are presented side by side: visitors interested in both will find information about each on the boards. If you are planning a specific visit to the trail, it is advisable to check local conditions beforehand.
Four Routes, Each with a Different Focus
The 2.5 km “Kastélyok, Kúriák” route passes former castles and mansions in Rácalmás. At 4.6 km, “Ófalu” is longer and leads to sights from Rácalmás’s past. You can choose between a route focused on former castles and mansions and a tour of historical sights.
The 15 km “Szakrális Emlékhelyek” route leads to local sites commemorating religious history. Two significant detours offer the option of shortening the route to suit your preference. Its length and the option to shorten it set it apart from the shorter trails; its focus is on local religious history.
At 14 km, the “Nagy-sziget” route passes the ecotourism nature trail and also explores the island’s unspoilt southern side. If the island is your main focus, you can choose between the floodplain nature trail through the landscape and this longer route, which also includes the southern side. The other routes focus on historical themes: former castles and mansions, sights from the past or sites commemorating religious history.
Architectural History and a Cultural Event
The Jankovich mansion was built in the 1750s. A specific cultural event held at this venue was the 22nd Rácalmási Tökfesztivál, which took place at the Jankovich mansion from 18 to 20 September 2026.
The 2026 edition’s programme included music and art performances, folk art and crafts, exhibitions, and tastings of Hungarian and international food and drink. When planning your trip, bear in mind that this information refers to the past edition held in September 2026.
Choose the Focus of Your Stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Rácalmás, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the protected island landscape, historically themed routes or the history of the Jankovich mansion. The routes vary in both subject and stated length; “Szakrális Emlékhelyek” also offers the option of shortening the route with two significant detours. This lets you choose a destination that suits your interests before deciding on accommodation.
