Előszállás: Monastery History, Baroque Church and Mikulás Run
Accommodation in Előszállás
Előszállás can be explored through several specific themes: a long history of settlement, a former Cistercian monastery, Baroque church architecture and an annual run to Nagykarácsony. The town’s history and the running event offer different starting points for planning your trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether historic buildings and their former functions or a recurring event are what most shape your interest in this destination.
Early settlement and the history of the “Kastély”
Előszállás and its surroundings were settled even before Roman times. The town’s name is documented in 1537 in the form “Elevzallas” in an Illésházy charter held at the Hungarian National Museum. These details point to different historical reference points: a settlement history dating back to before Roman times and a form of the name documented in 1537. The former Cistercian monastery, locally known as the “Kastély,” was built in 1765. It served as the estate manager’s residence, the centre of estate administration and accommodation for retired members of the order. Its former use thus brought together estate administration and religious life.
Baroque church architecture
The Roman Catholic Kisboldogasszony Parish Church in Előszállás is a Baroque building constructed in 1778–1779. Its features include a projecting central tower, a nave with two bays and a narrower, semicircular-ended chancel. A bay is a section of the nave, helping to explain how the nave is divided; the chancel forms the narrower, rounded end. A chapel dedicated to Saint Anne was also built in 1751. The difference in dates is clear: the chapel dates from 1751, while the parish church was built in 1778–1779. Two different construction periods and religious dedications can therefore be seen side by side.
The Mikulás run to Nagykarácsony
The annual “Mikulás-futás” (Santa Claus Run) runs from Előszállás to Nagykarácsony. A report on the 2024 edition mentions more than 100 participants covering the seven kilometres from Előszállás to Nagykarácsony. This particular edition offers a tangible example of the run, while its annual nature describes a recurring event. If you would like to plan your trip around the run, check the date for the year of your stay.
Road connections for orientation
Main Road 61 passes through Előszállás and connects Main Roads 6 and 7 on the route between Dunaföldvár and Nagykanizsa. Along this route, Előszállás is the first town after Dunaföldvár. The exit towards Előszállás is also located nearby, at kilometre 86 of the M6. The main road running through the town and the motorway exit are two separate points of reference for your journey. Check current road conditions and your route before setting off.
A nature theme in the wider destination
In the wider destination of Fejér County, the reed beds at Lake Velence provide a natural highlight: they are home to thousands of waterbirds. The thematic picture thus extends from Előszállás’s settlement and architectural history to a nature theme at the level of the wider destination.
