The castle from different perspectives
The National Blue Trail passes through Füzér and runs along the foot of the castle within the village. From the lower castle, after purchasing an admission ticket, you can reach the upper castle via wooden and stone steps. Conditions for the route from the lower castle to the upper castle may vary.
Füzér’s visitor centre houses the permanent exhibition “World of Preserved Values”. An exhibition at the visitor centre uses short animated films, games and videos on touchscreens to show how Füzér Castle was built in different eras. The permanent exhibition and the presentation of the castle’s development give the visitor centre a distinctive place in exploring the history of the village.
Church and past ways of life
Füzér’s Roman Catholic church stands in the centre of the village and was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style. Romanesque murals and a Romanesque doorway were uncovered during its restoration in 1998. The date of construction and the restoration discoveries offer two specific traces of history here.
The country house in Füzér was restored as a residential home to showcase the village’s rural building, domestic and household-equipment culture. The House of the Past takes visitors back to the period from the 1940s to the 1970s. At the REG-ÉLŐ vár exhibition, visitors can use and try out each piece of furniture on display; check current availability before your visit. The exhibitions offer different emphases: rural building and domestic culture, a later period, and furniture to try out.
Nature reserve and cycling connection
The entire grounds of Füzér Castle lie within a nature reserve. There are also different ways to get around the area: the National Blue Trail passes through the village, while a paved cycle path runs from Sátoraljaújhely to Füzér. Check current route conditions before cycling.
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén as the wider setting
The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén offers other landscape and cultural themes. The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is part of the Zemplén Mountains; the landscape conditions there influence the area’s plant and animal life. The Tokaj Wine Region is legally protected as a designated wine-growing area. Its climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes.
The Baradla-Domica cave system is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is one kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is rated as easy. These regional themes offer their own points of interest within Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén; they are distinct from the village scenery and sights of Füzér.
