Discover Ntamouchari: Coves, Trails and History
Accommodation in Ntamouchari
The small cove of Damouchari lies on the Aegean coast below Mouresi. A rocky peninsula divides it into two smaller coves, giving the coastline a clearly defined shape. Damouchari was formerly known as Tamouchari. Alongside the cove, a small harbour, beaches and hiking trails shape the area. Here, coastal scenery, history and hiking come together. This gives you a range of options to focus on during your stay.
Cove, Beach and Gorge
Old Damouchari beach is accessible and covered with white pebbles. At the end of the beach, the deep Halorema Gorge opens out, with lush wild vegetation growing within it. Here, the pebble shore meets the gorge at the end of the beach. The rocky peninsula also divides the cove into two smaller coves, giving the coastline a distinctive shape. If you want to consider coastal features and nature as well as the beach when planning your visit, you’ll find specific points of interest here.
Harbour and History
For a time, Damouchari’s small northern harbour served as the harbour of Mouresi and as a fishing settlement. It still resembles an original shelter for small boats. The peninsula is home to the ruins of the walls of a medieval castle. At the northern entrance to the area stands the old Church of Saint Nicholas, which is in good condition. The harbour, remains of the castle walls and church add local history, traces of medieval fortifications and a religious building to the coastal scenery. For those interested in culture, history and architecture are also part of discovering Damouchari.
Trails for Different Plans
A 3 km downhill trail leads from Tsagarada to Damouchari, ending at Damouchari beach. Check local conditions before setting off. Another paved trail continues from Old Damouchari towards Tsagarada and Fakistra beach. This describes two specific walking options: one ending at Damouchari beach, and another continuing from Old Damouchari towards Fakistra.
Damouchari is also on the fifth section of the Long Pelion Trail. This 24 km section connects Hania with Tsagarada. For hikers, Damouchari can serve as an overnight stop on this leg before they continue along the uphill section the following day. The two distances refer to different routes: 3 km for the trail from Tsagarada to Damouchari, and 24 km for the fifth section between Hania and Tsagarada. Keep this distinction in mind when planning your hike.
Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Travel Plans
Coastal scenery and historic sights call for a different day plan than a hike with a possible overnight stop. So consider whether you mainly want to experience the coves and local history, or include Damouchari as part of a longer trail section. This will help you focus your search on the experiences you want to shape your stay.
