Achillio combines a strong connection to the coast with a specific maritime theme: the beach and bay define the village, while the marine museum focuses on marine life and sponge diving. These offer different starting points for planning your holiday. You can consider whether the coast or the natural history and cultural history themes will shape your stay more. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth keeping these interests in mind when choosing your destination.

Coast between the curving beach and the bay

Achillio is a coastal village extending along a sheltered curve of beach on Pteleos Bay. Achillio’s North Beach occupies part of the 4.8-kilometre-long Bay of Achillio. These two details refer to different geographical scales: the first describes the village’s position along the beach, while the second gives the length of the bay and the share occupied by the North Beach. Achillio Beach received the “Blue Flag” award in 2025.

Marine life and sponge diving

Crabs, sea urchins and corals are among the marine life on display at the marine museum in Achillio. Through texts, drawings and photographs, visitors can learn more about the biology, anatomy and ecology of marine life. These three subjects offer different perspectives: biology focuses on animals as living things, anatomy on their physical structure, and ecology on their relationships with their environment.

A separate section is devoted to sponge diving. The collection includes photographs, sponges and equipment such as kagava and skandalopetra. This adds a distinct focus alongside the marine life exhibits. There are two subject areas to choose from, depending on your interests: natural history questions about marine life, and sponge diving with its own dedicated collection.

The marine museum is suitable for organised outings and guided tours for school groups interested in environmental topics.

Local history and holiday interests

Achillio began to be settled around 1918 and grew out of the village of Hamako. According to local tradition, Hamako was named after Hamko, the mother of Ali Pasha, who usually spent the summer there. Thus, an approximate date for the start of settlement sits alongside a traditional explanation of the former village’s name.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Achillio, it helps to ask which aspect of the village you would like to shape your stay most. The beach and bay represent its coastal character; the marine museum and the story of Hamako add natural history and historical themes. For a family trip, you can discuss whether the coast, marine life and sponge diving, or local history are more likely to spark everyone’s curiosity. These interests give you a concrete starting point for choosing a holiday destination.
