Kini is a fishing village in the west of Syros, 9 kilometres from Hermoupolis. The village combines a beach with local cultural attractions and a starting point for a coastal route. The “Hike the West Beaches of Syros” hiking route begins at Kini beach and follows the west coast to quiet, less-explored stretches of shoreline. This makes Kini easy to include in your travel plans for its beach and coastal scenery, as well as for an active day out.

Beach, Museum and Village Character

Kini’s sandy beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. If this award is important to your plans, check its current status before travelling. Near the beach is the Museum of Fishing Vessels, Tools, Aquatic Organisms and Shells, 100 metres from Kini beach and considered unique in the Cyclades. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also stands on the hill above Kini.

These places offer different cultural points of interest in the village, while keeping the beach in focus as its central landmark. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether to focus your stay in Kini mainly on the beach and the start of the west coast route, or whether you are also interested in the historical and cultural attractions across the wider destination of Syros.

Fotarides and Festivals in Kini

For the Fotarides tradition, children decorate the beach and the stone benches in Kini. The tradition is observed on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. For families interested in local traditions, it offers a vivid glimpse of a custom connected with the village and its beach.

Another cultural event is the Feast of Saint Peter, held in Kini on 29 June for locals and visitors alike. These two traditions offer different dates to consider when planning a trip. If a festival is important to your stay, check the specific dates for your travel period.

Culture on Syros

Beyond local experiences, Syros offers more for culture enthusiasts. The Apollon Theater hosts theatrical performances, artistic events and international festivals, including opera, music and dance festivals featuring local and international artists. The theater was built between 1862 and 1864 to designs by Italian municipal architect Pietro Sambo. A small exhibition on the theater’s history includes works by local and other artists, historical posters and programmes, manuscripts, theater publications, photographs and objects of theatrical-historical significance. If you have a particular performance in mind, check the dates for your travel period.

Archaeology offers another perspective on Syros. The Archaeological Museum of Syros was founded in 1834–1835 as the central museum of the Cyclades. It displays finds from Kastri and Chalandriani, as well as sculptures, inscriptions and tombstones from the ancient city of Syros. The fortified settlement of Kastri dates approximately to 2300–2200 BC. Its described features include a low outer rampart, a main wall with horseshoe-shaped towers and an arched wall on the hill. Kastri and Chalandriani, on the northeastern coast of Apano Meria on Syros, are among the most important prehistoric sites in the Aegean.

The history of architecture adds to these archaeological themes. The Church of Agios Georgios complex on the summit of Ano Syros was built between 1832 and 1834 by Hadjisimos Nikolaos of Tinos. It is a three-aisled basilica with a portico of five arches. In Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros and the Cyclades, an icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary by Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) is displayed in the church of the same name. The work, painted on wood in egg tempera, is considered particularly important for understanding the painter’s artistic development. Syros’s cultural heritage thus spans everything from prehistoric fortifications to architecture and art history.
