Ermoúpolis brings together archaeological collections, the history of technology and the performing arts. Its themes range from prehistoric finds and the history of lead shot production to theatre, music and dance. You can plan your trip around your particular interests, whether archaeology, historic working life or the cultural programme.

Museums between archaeology and industrial history

The Archaeological Museum of Syros was founded in 1834–1835 as the Central Museum of the Cyclades and has been housed in Ermoúpolis Town Hall since 1901. Its collections include finds from Kastri and Chalandriani, two important prehistoric sites in the Cyclades. Sculptures, inscriptions and funerary stelae from the ancient city of Syros complement the collection. In this way, evidence of early settlements sits alongside objects from the history of the ancient city.

The Industrial Museum of Ermoúpolis also offers a distinctive perspective on the city’s past. On Syros, the museum is housed in four different historic buildings. One dedicated museum section is located in the Georgios Anairousis Shot Tower, the only one of its kind preserved in Europe. The building retains its original equipment and an exhibit on lead shot production. The Industrial Museum is accessible to people with disabilities; check the latest accessibility information before your trip.

The Textile Museum offers another perspective: during a guided tour of the former production rooms, each visitor carries a lantern. As this is a guided tour, it is best to check the latest dates directly with the provider.

Apollon Theatre: building history and cultural programme

The Apollon Theatre is one of Syros’s most important landmarks and symbolises the cultural heritage of Ermoúpolis. It was built between 1862 and 1864 to designs by the Italian municipal architect Pietro Sambo. Important cultural events are held there every year; throughout the year, the programme includes theatre performances and arts events, as well as international festivals featuring opera, music and dance. Local and international artists perform on its stage. If you want to plan your stay around a particular programme, check the event dates for your travel dates.

A small exhibition recalls the history of the theatre. On display are works by local and other artists, historic posters and programmes, manuscripts, theatre publications, photographs and objects of significance to theatre history. The exhibition content may change.

Syros’s wider cultural landscape

Beyond Ermoúpolis, Kastri and Chalandriani lead to Syros’s prehistoric sites. They lie on the northeastern coast of Apano Meria and are among the most significant prehistoric sites in the Aegean. The fortified settlement of Kastri dates to approximately 2300–2200 BC. Its described features include a low outer wall, a main wall with horseshoe-shaped towers and an arched wall on the hill. These sites provide further context for the objects in the Archaeological Museum.

The history of architecture on Syros also extends beyond the city. The Agios Georgios church complex on the summit of Ano Syros was built between 1832 and 1834 by Hadjisimos Nikolaos of Tinos. It is designed as a three-aisled basilica with a portico of five arches. In Ermoúpolis, an icon of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, is displayed in the church of the same name. The work, painted on wood in egg tempera, is considered particularly important for understanding the painter’s artistic development.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore choose according to the cultural focus of your trip: do you want to concentrate mainly on the museums and theatre in Ermoúpolis, or would you also like to include the archaeological and religious history of the wider island of Syros? This lets you set your own priorities without reducing the island’s diverse themes to a single cultural offering.
