Paros combines early Christian heritage, historic sites and a wide range of nature and cultural experiences. The island lies in the heart of the Cyclades. Organised day trips to nearby islands and beaches are offered from Paros; providers and schedules may vary.

Early Christian Heritage and Historic Sites

In the northeast of Parikia, near the harbour, stands Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of Greece’s most significant early Christian monuments. In the southern part of the church is the ancient baptistery, dating from the 4th century. It is considered the oldest and best-preserved baptistery in the Orthodox East. Ekatontapiliani also houses the Byzantine Museum of Parikia, with rare icons, wood carvings and other religious relics from the Byzantine period and the period of Ottoman rule.

The Kastro of Parikia also tells the story of earlier buildings: it preserves the ruins of a Venetian castle built from columns from ancient temples and other architectural elements. Near Parikia, on the hill of Agia Anna, lie the ruins of the Asclepion, a temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing. Together, these sites connect early Christian and Venetian history with the history of ancient religion.

In Lefkes stands Agia Triada, a listed church building dating from 1835, built from Parian marble. The church has a three-aisled basilica with a raised central aisle and two bell towers. Another historic church, Agios Georgios Thalassitis, was built in the 14th century and has the oldest frescoes on the island; it lies between the harbour and Logaras. Near Floga, southeast of Paros town, there is also an ancient sculptor’s workshop, about 160 metres west of the ancient city wall.

Paros’ museums focus on different subjects. The Sculpture Museum of sculptor and engraver N. Peratinos in Marpissa displays 192 of his works. The B. Skiadas Museum of Cycladic Folklore presents the history and traditions of Paros and the Aegean. In Naoussa, the Folklore Museum displays Dr Othon Kaparis’ collection, as well as a library, an extensive photographic archive and several archaeological finds.

Trails, Beaches and Events

The Paros Environmental and Cultural Park offers a seven-kilometre network of walking trails. It also has organised and unspoilt beaches and an amphitheatre with 700 seats for concerts and performances. This means the same park brings together a range of experiences: trails through the landscape, time at the beach and events. Since 2009, the park has hosted “Festival at the Park”, a summer programme of cultural, sporting and environmental events. Check specific event dates in advance.

Another cultural occasion is the Alyki Cultural Festival: it takes place every June, lasts three days and includes events in Alyki. For specific travel plans, it is worth checking the dates. “Routes in Marpissa” is a three-day cultural experience festival in Marpissa. Themed routes through traditional settlements form its basis; events take place along these routes during the celebrations.

Nature Watching and Active Days

The Butterfly Valley on Paros is a rare habitat for Jersey tiger moths, which can be seen there in large numbers on tree trunks. Walking tours, nature walks and cycling tours are organised for international visitors in Aliki, the island’s most important wetland. These two nature experiences offer a different focus from churches and museums: here, the emphasis is on wildlife watching and outdoor activities.

Monastiri Beach is organised and suitable for families. The water is shallow, so children can play there. Windsurfing is possible at Santa Maria, Chryssi Akti, Tsoukalia, Kolybithres and Pounta; windsurfing schools offer equipment and training. The activities described therefore range from quiet nature watching to watersports, without a beach visit or any particular activity programme needing to define the entire stay.

Choose a Holiday Apartment Based on the Experiences You Want

When looking for a holiday apartment, the places and themes you want to focus on during your holiday can help guide your search: historic sights in Parikia, Agia Triada in Lefkes, the Sculpture Museum and festival in Marpissa, or nature and beach spots such as the Butterfly Valley, Aliki and Monastiri. First, consider which experiences matter most for your trip. This way, you can tailor your search to your interests instead of reducing Paros to a single holiday theme.
