Discover Sifnos
Accommodation in Sifnos
Rugged slopes with terraces, whitewashed villages and old cobbled paths shape Sifnos in the southwestern Cyclades. The island brings landscape and culture together in its own distinctive way: you can explore marked hiking trails, visit pottery workshops and discover a cuisine whose traditions also include special dishes and baking. So when choosing a holiday apartment in Sifnos, it is worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay.
Hiking trails across a diverse island
Sifnos has more than 100 km of professionally laid out and marked hiking trails. They are numbered and equipped with signposts. QR codes provide information about destinations, durations and sights. This lets you factor different routes into your daily plans based on their listed destinations and information, without treating all the trails as alike.
One trail leads from Artemonas to Panagia Chrysopigi. Another route connects Artemonas with Profitis Ilias Apsilos. At 682 m, it is the highest mountain on Sifnos; the trail offers panoramic views across the Aegean. From Kamares, hiking trails lead to the Sanctuary of the Nymphs at Korakies, the Black Cave, the old mine sites and the NATURA area. These different destinations offer a range of starting points for active days out—from archaeological and historic sites to landscapes and nature.
You can also explore the island’s roads and paths by mountain bike or trekking bike, on your own or with a guide. If you are planning a family trip, you can weigh up everyone’s interests together: hiking, cycling, villages and culture offer a different focus from a stay centered on the coast.
Villages, pottery and living traditions
Apollonia, the Chora of Sifnos, spreads amphitheatrically across three hills in the center of the island. Its central location is a useful point of reference as you explore the different sides of Sifnos. The island’s traditional whitewashed villages are another defining feature. Kastro is identified with the ancient “Asty of the Siphnians” and adds a historic dimension to the island’s story.
Pottery is one of the oldest arts practiced on Sifnos, where it has been made since the Early Cycladic period. Today, the island has numerous pottery workshops. Together with its celebrated tradition of Greek cuisine, baking and confectionery, this craft makes Sifnos appealing to travelers interested in local culture as well as scenery and outdoor activities.
Sifnian traditions also include panigyria, traditional festivals featuring distinctive music, songs and dances. These include communal feasts with revithada and meat, as well as wine.
Sifnos on the plate and in history
Revithada is the main dish served at the traditional Sifnian Sunday table. It is cooked in a clay pot in the oven for many hours. Mastélo, by contrast, is an Easter dish: lamb or goat is cooked in a clay vessel of the same name, with red wine and dill, in a wood-fired oven. These different dishes show how closely local cuisine is tied to special occasions and traditional methods of preparation.
For history enthusiasts, the Acropolis of Agios Andreas is another notable site on the island. It dates from the 13th century BC and is the first organized archaeological site on Sifnos open to visitors. The Monastery of Panagia tis Chrysopigis on Cape Chrysopigi dates from 1523; Panagia tis Chrysopigis is the patron saint and protector of Sifnos.
Factor the coast and arrival into your holiday plans
Sifnos offers secluded sandy beaches, rocky shores, pebble beaches and organized beaches. Platýs Gialós is one of the island’s largest sandy beaches and receives the European Union Blue Flag each year under the FEE program. These differences offer a range of coastal experiences for your stay. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus your trip more on the coast, as well as on hiking and culture.
To get there, a sea route runs from Piraeus via Serifos to Sifnos and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. For planning the rest of your time on the island, you can use the journey, Apollonia’s central location and your preferred island activities as reference points.
