Kythnos
Accommodation in Kythnos
On Kythnos, island history, hiking trails and special places such as the thermal springs of Loutra come together. You can explore ancient sites on foot, visit museums in Chora or consider a tour on the water. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first thinking about which of these sides of the island you want to shape your stay.
Island history in Chora and Dryopida
The Archaeological Museum of Kythnos is housed in the former primary school building in Chora. Its exhibition spans a broad timeline, presenting episodes and periods in the island’s history from prehistoric times to the present day. The finds include evidence from the Mesolithic settlement of Maroulas, objects related to archaeometallurgy and items from the ancient city of Vryokastro. The museum introduces you to different chapters of the past, from early traces of settlement to an ancient city.
The Folklore Museum of Chora also tells the story of life on Kythnos: objects are displayed in a traditional house on the piazza. Pottery classes are also held in the centre of the village. Participants are guided step by step and can take home handmade souvenirs at the end. In Dryopida, the Church of Agios Minas has a wood-carved iconostasis, an episcopal throne and an intricately designed epitaphios. Those interested in different forms of island history and craftsmanship will find a variety of points of interest here.
Hiking trails to castle ruins and ancient temples
Kythnos has an extensive network of hiking trails. Some routes end at beaches, archaeological sites or viewpoints. Route 1 heads towards Oria Castle and the ruins of its settlement. Another hike, Route 6, leads towards Vryokastro and the ancient temples of Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite and Demeter. You can plan your hiking days according to whether you would rather visit ruins or ancient places of worship.
The Ancient Trails activity runs from Episkopi Beach to Apokrousi Beach, passing the archaeological site of Vryokastro. Medieval Trails starts above the settlement of Loutra and leads to a fork; from there, a western branch continues to Oria Castle. These route descriptions lead to different places and should not be understood as a single combined route. When planning, the destinations can help you choose between coastal spots, archaeological sites and historic ruins.
Loutra, the sea and experiences on the water
In Loutra Bay, thermal springs flow into the sea. The Kakavos spring in Loutra reaches a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius. A local diving centre also organises diving trips in the Loutra area. Loutra thus brings together two different themes for your stay: thermal springs and underwater activities.
Another option on the water is the Kayak Kolona tour. It starts at Apokrousi Beach, goes to the ancient port of Vryokastro and Kolona Beach, and ends at the thermal springs. If you prefer to stay on land, you can explore the hiking trails to archaeological sites. Village cooking classes are also offered on Kythnos: with guidance, participants prepare dishes and then eat their own creations.
Explore cultural and natural sites
Panagia Kanala, an important pilgrimage site in the Cyclades, is located in the southeast of Kythnos. The Katafyki Cave, meanwhile, consists of a large natural cave and artificial mining arches. These places complement the museums and hiking destinations with religious history and a distinctive cave landscape.
Consider which experiences matter to you, and focus your search on a suitable place to stay on Kythnos rather than choosing accommodation based on just one aspect of the island.
