Vitína Between Forest Paths and History
Accommodation in Vitína
Vitína lies on the slopes of Mount Mainalo. The town’s grove is home to pines, firs, maples and acacias; the Menalon Trail and other mapped paths also run through the surrounding area. Other features include a long-established library, a Folklore Museum and memories of earlier customs. This lets you get to know Vitína through nature, walks and culture, without limiting your stay to just one kind of outing.
Walking Trails Around Vitína
The Menalon Trail is 75 kilometres long and passes through Vitína. From there, the route heads towards Nymfasía. After 850 metres on asphalt, you reach Old Vytina on this section, as well as the starting point of the footpath to Mavra Litharia. The stone Makrinou Fountain is also along the route. In the immediate vicinity of Vitína, the Menalon Trail passes through the short, impressive Mavro Litharia Gorge between Vitína and Nymfasía.
Another option is the walking route from Elati to Vitína, which is described as suitable for family outings. The routes differ in their course for planning your day: the Menalon Trail heads from Vitína towards Nymfasía, while the other walking route runs from Elati to Vitína. Before setting out, check the operator’s latest route information; trail conditions and access may change.
A Walk in the Grove
If you would like to include a walk as well as longer hiking trails, Vitína’s grove is a good place to do so. The tree species mentioned there include pines, firs, maples and acacias. The grove offers a way to enjoy nature within the town, while the Menalon Trail, with its named sections, continues towards Nymfasía. Deciding which of these experiences you would like to prioritise can be a useful starting point for planning your day.
The Library and Local History
Vitína’s Public Library is housed in a 19th-century building and preserves old books and photographic material. It is one of the oldest libraries of its kind in Greece. The present library building was once home to the “Κορασίων Σχολή”, founded by Vytina schoolmaster Archimandrite Panagiotis Zafeiropoulos. The building thus combines its current role as a library with the history of an earlier educational institution.
The “Street of Love” is also part of the town’s history: young people from Vitína used to meet there in the hope of finding a partner. This historical custom offers a different way to connect with Vitína than its walking trails or the library’s book collection, adding a personal, social dimension to the town’s history.
Getting Around Town and Choosing Accommodation
Visitors can have coffee or lunch in the main square, K. Paparigopoulou. Vitína’s Folklore Museum is within easy walking distance of the square. Individual businesses and their availability may change. If you would like to visit the main square and the Folklore Museum, you can take both into account when choosing the location of your holiday apartment.
Long-distance KTEL buses connect Vitína with Tripoli, Athens and nearby towns. If you plan to rely on one of these connections for your journey, check the latest timetable. The mix of activities you want for your days may also influence your choice of accommodation: would you like your stay to include walks in the grove, hiking trails or cultural stops in town? Vitína’s landscape, trail sections and historic places offer different points of interest to choose from.
