Nestani combines the character of a mountain village with the distinctive hill or rock of Goulas and historic sites in the surrounding area. At the foot of Mount Artemísio, the village is laid out in an amphitheatrical arrangement; traditional architectural features and the large square with plane trees define its appearance. Rising behind Nestani, as seen from the village centre, is the distinctive hill or rock of Goulas. You can plan your trip around the village itself, cultural landmarks and outdoor activities.

Mountain Village Between the Square and Goulas

The square with its plane trees is a prominent landmark in Nestani. Along with the traditional architectural features, it draws attention to the village’s character, while Goulas provides a focal point in the landscape. The hill or rock of Goulas lies behind the village, as seen from the village centre. This gives you two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the amphitheatrically laid-out mountain village and the distinctive hill or rock. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can decide whether to give greater weight to Nestani’s village character or to the destinations around Goulas.

The Monastery and Chapel as Cultural Landmarks

The Monastery of Gorgoepikoos is in the vicinity of Nestani, about half an hour away on foot. It was founded in 1030 and stands on an archaeological site with an important ancient cult tradition. Its founding date and location give the monastery a distinct historical significance. The renovated Chapel of Saint George also stands on the summit of Goulas in Nestani. Together with the village square and the mountain village setting, these sites are specific cultural and historical points of interest that distinguish Nestani from the climbing and hiking opportunities.

Climbing in Six Sectors

The Nestani climbing area has 80 routes across six sectors: Pyrgos tis Nestánis, Moreas, Argon Pedion, Voulomeni, Lithari and Oneiropolos. The number may change as climbing routes are developed. The Voulomeni, Argon Pedion and Oneiropolos sectors are considered suitable for children and families. The reasons given are the relatively short approach along a path and the level areas beneath the cliffs. This suitability applies to the three sectors named; it does not mean that the other sectors are automatically described in the same way. If you would like to include climbing in your trip, the named sectors can help you choose an area more precisely rather than treating all the routes as a single, uniform offering.

Hike to Goulas and Drive to Voulomeni

According to the route description, the hike starts at Nestani village square and follows a route up Goulas, above the village and the Monastery of Gorgoepikoos. It takes almost two hours and requires a guide. Check route conditions and guide availability before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish this hike by its duration from time spent in the village or a day of climbing, without assuming an additional walking time.

To reach the climbing area at Voulomeni Park, take the exit from the Athens–Tripoli motorway immediately after the Nestani toll plaza, then continue in the direction of the village. There is a designated car park beside a side road at the park. Check current navigation before driving, as road layouts may change.
