School History and Political Past

The Porfyriada School was founded in 1784 in Néon Karlovásion. Karlovasi’s role in 1821 is also part of the town’s history: the town was a centre of the revolutionary movement, in which Lykourgos Logothetis, who came from Karlovasi, played a leading role. These two points of reference represent different sides of history—education on the one hand and political activism on the other.

The Ηγεμονικό Μέγαρο was built as the ruler’s residence during the Hegemony of Samos. The University of the Aegean’s Faculty of Sciences is also associated with Karlovasi; institutional presence may change over time. Potami Beach is in the northwest of Samos, west of Karlovasi.
