Mesokampos on Samos combines a rocky beach with water sports facilities and a cultural landmark on the coast. The area can be explored through different interests: the beach, activities on the water and sacred culture. When looking for a holiday apartment, this offers a first guide: consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Rocky Coast and Water Sports

The coastal area of Mesókampos beach is rocky, with tamarisk trees standing here and there. This gives the coast a distinctive landscape. The beach also has facilities for water sports. If you would like to include these in your holiday plans, check their current availability before travelling.

The rocky coastal area and the water sports facilities offer two specific points to consider when choosing a place to stay: the landscape by the shore and the desire to enjoy activities on the water.

Coastal Church and Surrounding Nature

The coastal church of Panagia Eleousa is located in the Potami Mesokampou area of Samos. It is dedicated to the Merciful Panagia. Its dedication and location add a cultural dimension to holiday planning alongside the beach and water sports. Those interested in sacred sites will find another facet of the destination here.

The Mesokampos wetland is part of the surrounding area. The cuckoo is one of the important species found there. This natural setting adds another dimension to the coast: alongside the beach, the birds and wetland offer an opportunity to explore nature.

Samos: Archaeology and Landscape

On the wider destination of Samos, Pythagoreion offers a distinct archaeological focus. The remains of an ancient fortified harbour, with Greek and Roman monuments, and an impressive tunnel aqueduct have been preserved there. Dating from the 6th century BC, the Tunnel of Eupalinos runs 1,036 metres through the mountainside to supply the ancient city with water. It was built by Eupalinos of Megara, son of Naustrofus.

The museums on Samos also offer different perspectives. The Archaeological Museum of Samos is spread across two locations: a two-storey neoclassical building from 1912 displaying finds from the Heraion of Samos, and a new building from 1984 housing a collection of sculptures and important works from the Archaic period. The Archaeological Museum of Pythagoreion is in the centre of modern Pythagoreion, on the site of the ancient city of Samos. Its more than 3,000 objects cover the cultural development of the ancient city and its rural surroundings from the 4th millennium BC to the 7th century AD. While the museum in Samos displays finds from the Heraion and Archaic sculptures, the collection in Pythagoreion spans a long period of time.

Another glimpse into Samian architecture can be found at the Great Temple of the goddess Hera. Construction began during the rule of Polycrates, around 535 to 522 BC. The planned temple measured 55.16 by 108.63 metres and had a peristyle of 155 columns, each intended to be about 20 metres high. The dimensions and number of columns convey the planned scale of the building.

The landscape and outdoor activities are also part of what Samos has to offer. Marked paths on Mount Kerkis cross gorges, chestnut groves and olive groves; along the way, there are views stretching from the Ionian coast to the Cyclades. On Mount Ambelos, the Vourliotes–Manolates trail is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and off-road excursions. Check local conditions and the current safety situation before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide what you would most like to focus on: the beach, water sports and the coastal church in Mesokampos, or archaeological and landscape attractions on Samos.
