Vasilikos is a small, picturesque holiday resort 15.5 kilometres southeast of Zakynthos Town. Several beaches nearby offer opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and water sports; the wider destination of Zakynthos also offers other nature and culture-related attractions. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider two scales: proximity to beaches around the resort and other interests you would like to pursue on Zakynthos.

Beaches and activities nearby

Gerakas, Porto Roma, Agios Nikolaos, Banana, Porto Zoro and Kaminia are all near Vasilikos. At these beaches, you can swim, sunbathe and enjoy water sports; many of the beaches are well equipped. This gives you a range of ideas for a day at the beach: time in the water, sunshine on the shore or activity on the water. As arrangements and facilities may change, it is worth checking the current conditions at each beach before visiting.

If beach days are a focus of your trip, these beaches can be a useful point of reference when choosing your holiday apartment. Consider which location suits your planned activities, without grouping swimming, sunbathing and water sports into a single type of outing: each offers a different way to spend time together by the sea.

Nature and marine conservation

The protected island of Pelouzo is within the municipality; loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) breed there. This adds a distinct nature and conservation aspect to the beach activities. The Zakynthos National Marine Park information centre or research station is also nearby, in Gerakas–Vasilikos. The station began operating in 2014. If you are considering a visit, check the current access arrangements in advance.

Zakynthos: other cultural and nature-related attractions

The wider destination of Zakynthos offers other points of interest in culture and history. The Museum of Zakynthos displays works from the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons and works of Ionian Naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Since 1968, the ground-floor mausoleum at the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians has housed the remains of the national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos. The collections and memorial to the poets offer different insights into the island’s artistic and cultural history.

The natural sites each have their own character, too: the Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site and a nature reserve within the Zakynthos National Marine Park. The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic views at sunset over the Ionian Sea and the rocks of Myzithres. These different attractions can help you decide whether you would like to combine your trip with a focus on landscapes, conservation or culture.

Other regional highlights can be found in Volimes: the Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna was founded in 1535. Zakynthian Ladotyri cheese is made there in dairies and home workshops and sold as a local product. The port of Agios Nikolaos in Volimes is a seaport and connects Zakynthos to Kefalonia by ferry. If you plan to use this ferry connection, check the current timetable. These cultural and natural attractions, along with the port, are part of the wider destination of Zakynthos and complement the beach-related options near Vasilikos with other possible points of interest.
