Zákynthos: Arcades, Churches and Cultural History

The broad arcades along the central streets of Rouga and Strata Marina are a surviving feature of the architecture of old Zakynthos, which was destroyed in 1953. The city’s history is thus also visible in its streetscape. Churches, libraries and museums complement this architectural perspective with religious, biographical and art-historical themes.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of Agios Nikolaos tou Molou was founded in 1561 by the guild of sailors. The church and its bell tower were restored to their pre-earthquake appearance. The Catholic Church of Agios Markos was founded in 1518 and retains its pre-earthquake exterior. The two foundation dates and the buildings’ distinct features provide several historical reference points in the cityscape: the sailors’ guild is central to Agios Nikolaos tou Molou, while Agios Markos is notable for its preserved exterior.

Libraries and Museums

On the waterfront, the Roma House Museum houses memorabilia from the 15th to the 20th century that are directly connected with the modern history of Greece. The collection also includes a library with more than 10,000 rare editions, manuscripts, maps and prints. Personal memorabilia are brought together here with extensive written and graphic collections.

The Public Library of Zakynthos is located in the cultural centre on Solomos Square in the city centre. Its collections include valuable books, newspapers and printed materials from before the earthquake. This gives it a different focus from the Roma House Museum: here, older printed publications define the collection, while there, memorabilia and rare materials spanning several centuries sit side by side.

The Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians is located on Agios Markos Square in the city centre. It houses the tombs of Solomos and Kalvos, manuscripts by the national poet, and personal belongings of prominent Zakynthians, including Xenopoulos and Romas. The Zakynthos Museum displays religious icons from the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons and works of Ionian Naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. In this way, biographical memorabilia and art-historical collections offer distinct perspectives on culture side by side.

Festivals, music events and local celebrations take place at the port and in the narrow streets.
