Argyrades lies among three green hills on a natural elevation that offers natural protection. In one part of the village, there are old, dilapidated buildings and homes. The village’s distinctive topographical setting and its historic buildings both shape its character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Argyrades, you can consider this village setting as a key factor when choosing where to stay.

Hills, beach and wetland nearby

The sandy beach of Agios Georgios is close to Argyrades. It lies between the beaches of Issos and Marathias, bringing a coastal landscape into the picture when considering the area around the village. The village and the beach offer different points of interest for planning a holiday: the hills and elevation describe Argyrades itself, while nearby Agios Georgios is a separate beach option.

Lake Korission is also in the nearby coastal area. It is considered Corfu’s most important wetland and covers 6,000 stremmata. If you are considering nature and coastal attractions when choosing accommodation, you will find further landscape features on Corfu that differ from Argyrades’ village scenery.

Corfu: historic town and museums

Corfu Old Town offers its own cultural highlight. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved, and its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses a collection of more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia.

The connection from Corfu Port is also relevant when visiting the Museum of Asian Art: it can be reached by bus line 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before travelling. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment dates from 585 BC and was excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery.

Various places on Corfu offer further insights into the island’s history. Casa Parlante recreates the daily life of the island’s nobility in the 19th century, in the historic Old Town, with moving figures and recreated furnishings. Through artefacts and documents, the permanent exhibition at the Kapodistrias Museum explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.

Scenery, trails and traditions on Corfu

Corfu’s landscapes and activities offer a range of different experiences. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The Corfu Trail is 180 kilometres long, passes through several settlements and includes Benitses among its 13 overnight stops.

Numerous festivals, folk celebrations and cultural events organised by the municipality take place in the villages of the municipal unit of Achilleion. You can check individual events and their dates separately when planning your trip. Mon Repos offers a different landscape: its 258-acre park is characterised by numerous exotic plants that have been growing there for a long time. A lush garden on a hill lies by the Kapodistrias Museum, with views across the landscape of Corfu and the island.

Coastal destinations on Corfu also differ in their specific features. Benitses Beach lies next to the marina and consists of a narrow, organised sandy beach with facilities for people with disabilities. The Achilleion Summer Palace was built in Gastouri in 1892 in the Pompeian style.

Choosing the right holiday location

When choosing your holiday apartment, it is worth first identifying your priorities: would you like the village setting of Argyrades, with its hills and historic buildings, to be the main focus, or would you prefer to organise your stay around specific beaches, natural attractions and cultural destinations on Corfu? Consider which places you would like to visit and choose accommodation to suit those priorities. This keeps Argyrades clearly distinct as a holiday destination from the other places on Corfu.
