Róda between the beach and ancient history
Accommodation in Róda
Róda combines a sandy beach and water sports with an archaeological trace from antiquity. The coastal village is shaped both by the sea and by the remains of a Doric temple. You can combine two interests on your holiday: time at the beach and a glimpse into Róda’s history.
Beach and village character
The sandy beach lies directly in front of the coastal village of Róda and is considered a central part of the village. Sand and calm, shallow water define the beach, though conditions can vary. The beach is an organized bathing beach with several water sports options. There are also restaurants and bars. This gives you a choice of different ways to spend your beach day, from swimming to more active hours on the water. If a particular water sports activity or restaurant is important to your plans, it is best to check availability in advance.
An ancient site in Róda
A Doric peripteral temple dating to the 5th century BC was discovered in Róda and excavated in 1938–1939. It survives at foundation level. The dates refer to two different periods: the 5th century BC is the temple’s date, while 1938–1939 are the years of its excavation. Together, the construction period, excavation, and level of preservation give the site’s archaeological significance a concrete context. The temple site thus offers a different perspective on Róda from the beach: the village’s character is shaped not only by the coast but also by its long history.
Corfu: city history, museums, and trails
Corfu’s Old Town is a distinct historical focal point. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cityscape and historical span make it a different cultural experience from the archaeological temple site in Róda.
Corfu’s museums offer further points of interest. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to display the Gorgon-Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. Corfu thus offers a range of historical and cultural collections, from an ancient temple pediment to objects from several regions of Asia.
Hiking is another distinct focus on Corfu. The 180-kilometer Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 overnight stops. The long-distance route offers a different travel experience from the beach and water sports in Róda, without suggesting that the two are the same kind of experience.
Which holiday focus suits your trip?
A simple question can help with planning: should your stay focus mainly on the beach and water sports in Róda, or would you also like to include city history, museums, and hiking on Corfu? Róda combines the coastal village’s beach appeal with a specific archaeological feature; the other cultural and hiking destinations are located elsewhere on Corfu. Start your search for a holiday apartment by deciding which focus matters most for your trip.
