Preveza: Discover Venetian History and Culture
Accommodation in Preveza
Preveza combines distinctive architectural history with art and a lively everyday tradition. Churches, fortresses and clock towers tell the story of different eras; at Kyani Akti beach, the Ambali game offers a glimpse of a local tradition. You can shape your trip around historic sites, exhibitions and everyday life.
Churches, Museum and Art
The Church of Agios Athanasios is a single-aisled basilica with a semicircular apse at its eastern end. Its wall paintings date to 1780. The architecture and frescoes give the visit a concrete historical context: the building’s form and its paintings are distinct details that reveal the church’s history.
The permanent exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis conveys the city’s thousand-year history through insights into the public and private lives of its inhabitants. The museum thus broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings to include aspects of daily life. The Ioannis Moralis Municipal Gallery is housed in the Athanasiadis House in the historic center of Preveza and offers another point of interest for an art-focused visit.
Fortresses and Clock Towers
The Castle of Saint Andrew was initially built by the Ottomans in the second half of the 18th century as a fortification on the northern side of Preveza. A defensive moat surrounded the complex. The later use of the Castle of Saint George is part of its history: until 1912 it served as an Ottoman barracks, and from then until 2002 as a military camp. Entry to the Castle of Saint George is not permitted; only the outer wall is visible.
The Clock Tower of Saint Charalambos was completed in 1792, towards the end of Venetian rule. Its original bell came from the Canciani bell founders in Venice; the sundial is said to have been installed in 1854. Another historic marker is the Venetian Clock Tower in Preveza’s historic city center, which dates from 1752. The different dates help place these architectural landmarks in time without conflating their histories as if they belonged to a single building.
Everyday Tradition at the Beach
At Kyani Akti beach, you can watch local residents play Ambali. The game uses metal balls and dates back to the Venetian period. This offers a different way to experience local culture than visiting churches, fortresses and exhibitions: here, the focus is on a tradition that is part of residents’ everyday lives.
In the Wider Preveza Destination
The archaeological trails in the wider Preveza destination also offer a distinctive perspective on the region’s history. The archaeological site of Nikopolis has a main route and six secondary routes connecting nine monumental areas. Those especially interested in ancient history will find a different way to explore the area here than among the city’s individual historic buildings.
Preveza also has a second coastal cycling route: it is about 10 kilometers long, has a low difficulty level, and connects the town beach, Kiani Akti, Pantokratoras, the fishing harbor, Alonaki and the settlement of Drosia. The route therefore offers a different focus from paths between historic buildings. The Pantokratoras fortress was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha, based on plans by the French engineer Yadocourt. Its location allowed complete control of shipping at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf.
Regional specialties are another way to get to know the area: local products of Preveza include shrimp from the Amvrakikos Gulf and the famous bottarga from the Amvrakikos Gulf. Along with the churches, fortresses, exhibitions and Ambali game, they offer a range of themes to shape your trip around.
