Nithafri: Old Well, Church and Caves
Accommodation in Nithafri
Nithafri offers a tangible historical landmark in the village and clearly distinct destinations nearby: a medieval church northeast of the village and two caves. There is also the Kalikas Plateau route, where water supply is a consideration, as there is no water source along the route. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on the village itself or also include the church, caves and route in your plans.
The Old Well in the Village
As an inscription built into it shows, the Old Well of Níthavris took on its present form in 1920. The livestock watering troughs and washbasins are arranged in a line and have been preserved in excellent condition. The inscription establishes the date of the well’s present form; the arrangement shows how the various components follow one another within the ensemble. The well is thus defined both by its date and by its clearly described layout. For travellers interested in built heritage, it offers a tangible historical connection to Nithafri.
Panagia Asfentamiani: History and Views
The small medieval church of Panagia Asfentamiani is about 2 km northeast of Nithafri, a short distance away and at an elevation of approximately 550 m. Its setting is higher up, surrounded by greenery, and offers expansive views. The church was originally decorated with frescoes; remnants were still visible until recently. Unlike the Old Well, the focus here is not on an inscription and the arrangement of structural elements, but on the medieval church, its former frescoes and its green, scenic setting. Architecture and landscape come together at this site.
Two Caves, Different Points of Reference
Onimarchos Cave lies northeast of Níthavris, at Kalikas, at an elevation of 700 m. Stalactites and stalagmites can be seen inside. Notiki-Trypa Cave on the Kalikas Plateau serves a different purpose as a point of reference: the Kalikas Plateau route ends there. The two caves therefore stand out for different reasons. At Onimarchos, the formations inside are a defining feature; at Notiki-Trypa, its position as the route’s endpoint is key. If you are including caves in your travel plans, this distinction helps you tell the two destinations and their respective points of reference apart.
Water for the Route
There is no water source along the route to the Kalikas Plateau. Hikers are therefore asked to collect water from the spring in Níthavris village square. Check water availability locally before setting out on the route. There is also a drinking-water well in the courtyard of the Church of Panagia Asfentamiani, supplied by a spring, but it runs dry during the summer months. The spring in the village square is recommended for the hike; the seasonal note applies to the well in the church courtyard. When planning, make sure to associate each piece of information with the location specified.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Interests
When looking for a holiday apartment in Nithafri, your preferred daily itinerary is a helpful starting point: do you want to focus on the village itself and the Old Well, or would you also like to consider the nearby church and caves? The Kalikas Plateau route raises a separate question about water supply. If you are travelling with others, you can compare your interests in advance to see whether they mainly involve the village’s history or also include nearby destinations and the route.
