Meskla lies 200 m above sea level on a plateau by the Keritis River, 21 km southwest of Chania. The river plateau, hidden springs, and Sarakina Gorge shape the landscape; the area around the village also has historic structures. There are also churches with distinct features. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Meskla, you can first consider whether natural formations or cultural traces should play a greater role in your stay.

Plateau, Springs, and Sarakina Gorge

The water springs lie south of Meskla. The springs of the Keritis River, in turn, are hidden among rocks and beneath evergreen plane trees. These two landscape features give the area distinct contours: the plateau describes its elevated setting, while the rocks, trees, and springs reveal a sheltered, hidden side of the surroundings. Those interested in river landscapes will therefore find more than just an indication of elevation here—they will also find specific landscape features.

Sarakina Gorge is also hidden in the landscape around Meskla and is difficult to find. Over hundreds, possibly thousands, of years, water has shaped the compact limestone rocks into a narrow passage. It is 1 to 2 m wide, 10 to 15 m long, and more than 10 m high. These measurements illustrate the passage’s distinctive form: it is narrow, yet also high and comparatively long. This gives the gorge a different character from the open plateau.

A hiking trail runs through Sarakina Gorge. Carefully constructed wooden structures line the uphill sections; steps make walking easier. Small metal bridges are provided at some of the more difficult points.

Historical Traces in and Around Meskla

The area around Meskla contains Cyclopean walls, houses carved into the rock, and ruins of a fortress dating from Classical Antiquity. These features point to different ways of exploring the history of the area: the walls draw attention to their construction, the houses to architecture carved into the rock, and the fortress to a specifically named historical period. Together, they form a cultural contrast with the landscape shaped by the plateau, river springs, and gorge.

The churches also have their own distinctive features. At the end of Meskla, the Church of the Conception of the Mother of God stands in front of a larger, newer church of the same name. Meskla is also home to the Byzantine church of Sotiras Christ. Its frescoes date from 1403 and were painted by Theodoros and Michalis Venieris; many are in poor condition. At this church, a specific date, the painters’ names, and the recorded condition of many of the frescoes come together. This distinguishes it from the Church of the Conception of the Mother of God, whose position in front of the larger, newer building of the same name draws attention to the two churches.

Meskla as a Holiday Rental Destination

When choosing a holiday rental in Meskla, you can set a practical focus: Sarakina Gorge and the springs appeal to those interested in landscape and geology, while the churches, frescoes, and historic structures offer cultural points of interest. If you would like to combine both, you can weigh up Meskla as a holiday destination based on these themes. Its location 21 km southwest of Chania places the village on the map; the plateau and gorge also describe its distinctive landscape.
