From Almyrida, Cape Akrotiri can be seen across Souda Bay. This expansive view complements the beach and water sports; archaeological remains and events from the area’s history add further dimensions to the destination. In Almyrida, a coastal perspective meets a history spanning several eras.

Beach and Water

The water at Almyrida beach is clean and calm; it is also shallow and considered suitable for families with children. Conditions can vary. The shallow water is a specific consideration for families choosing a destination based on which beach features suit their holiday. The beach and water can therefore provide a focus alongside the area’s activities and historical themes.

Activities on the Water

Visitors to Almyrida can go windsurfing, canoeing and diving. These activities offer different ways to spend time on the water: windsurfing and canoeing take place on the surface, while diving focuses on the underwater world. For current availability, check with local providers.

Archaeological Remains

The ruins of a Greco-Roman city remain on Foinikia Hill, northwest of the church in Almyrida. At the western edge of the area, on the road to Kalives, the ruins of a sixth-century, three-aisled early Christian basilica with mosaic floors were discovered and excavated by the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The two archaeological remains represent different eras and building forms: a city and an early Christian basilica. Together, settlement remains and religious architecture add to the area’s history. Three-aisled means that the building is divided into three longitudinal aisles.

The Area’s Changing History

The battles of Almyrida took place from June 30 to July 4, 1896. They were connected with the revolution of 1895–1896 and the liberation of Apokoronas and Crete. The area’s development as a tourist destination is also part of its history: after beginning in the 1980s, Almyrida became a popular holiday destination for many Greek and foreign visitors within just a few years. The events of the late 19th century and the later transformation into a holiday destination thus belong to markedly different historical contexts.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Travel Interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Almyrida, consider which aspects of the area suit your trip: a focus on the beach and water sports, or an interest in archaeological and historical topics as well. These different aspects provide a concrete basis for weighing up the kind of stay you want, without reducing Almyrida to a single experience.
