Karpenísion combines summer culture and history with trails and attractions in the surrounding area. In the town, events, a cultural centre and a historically significant cathedral take centre stage; beyond the town, there are routes to villages and regional destinations. This lets you shape your trip around culture, history and activity.

Summer Culture and History

Since 1964, the “Giortes Dasous” (Forest Festival) has welcomed visitors to Karpenísi every summer with concerts and theatre performances. When planning your trip, bear in mind that it takes place in summer; individual events may vary. If you are travelling specifically for the festival, check the dates and programme in advance.

The Evrytania Centre for History and Culture in Karpenísi has six rooms. Two of them are specially equipped as screening rooms. In the “Hall of Episkopi”, visitors can see the Church of Episkopi, which was submerged beneath Lake Kremasta.

The Agia Triada Cathedral is considered Karpenísion’s most historically significant monument. Together with the cultural centre, it offers cultural points of interest beyond the summer events programme.

Nearby is Koryschades. The building where the Council of the Political Committee of National Liberation met now houses the Museum of National Resistance and is a tourist attraction. The former meeting place and its present-day use as a museum come together in the same building.

Hiking Trails and Attractions in the Wider Area

In the wider region, Frangistorema offers numerous routes from East and West Frangista to Karpenísi; the respective hiking routes are 41 km and 44 km long. A hiking trail also connects Megalo Chorio with Gavros. Another route runs from Neo Mikro Chorio along a forest road to the village of Nostimo.

The route descriptions highlight different features: Frangistorema has two stated trail lengths, the trail between Megalo Chorio and Gavros connects two villages, and the route to Nostimo includes a section along a forest road. The route descriptions can help you decide which kind of hiking experience interests you most.

The Monastery of Proussos is also recommended as a place to visit. The waterfalls at Krikelopotamos are another notable attraction. Both add further points of interest to the regional destinations beyond the hiking trails.

Regional Specialities and Trip Planning

Regional specialities in the wider area include courgette flowers, Moutzoti—a local cheese pie—and local sausages. The wider travel area also offers Mouro, a local tsipouro made from mulberry distillate, and Katiki or Tsalafouti: a fresh soft cheese made from goat’s and sheep’s milk using traditional methods.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you prefer to centre it on Karpenísion’s cultural sites and events, or also include hiking trails and attractions in the wider region? This choice can guide your trip planning without turning the different destinations into a fixed itinerary.
