Evritania is the mountainous region of the southern Pindos. High peaks, gorges, rivers and historic sites give the region its distinctive character. When choosing a holiday rental for your stay, you can first consider what you would like your holiday to focus on: winter sports at Velouchi, trails through the mountain landscape, water activities or cultural history. The destinations and activities differ considerably, so this question can help guide your travel planning.

Mountains and trails for active days

The Velouchi Ski Centre has five lifts and 18 pistes. These include two snowboard runs; there are also four off-piste routes. The ski centre is 12 kilometres from Karpenisi. If winter sports are the main focus of your trip, you can take this distance into account when choosing your accommodation and planning your days. The details about the pistes and lifts make Velouchi a specific destination for a stay centred on skiing or snowboarding.

Outside the ski area, the trails offer a variety of experiences. Sections of the European long-distance trail E4 pass through Evritania. These include routes to high peaks, as well as shorter trails through gorges and forests and over stone bridges. If you would rather plan a shorter outing than a route to the peaks, this selection offers a suitable starting point for organising your day. At Mavri Spilia, the via ferrata begins after a 20-minute hike along the marked M7 trail. Be sure to take this approach into account when planning your visit.

Explore gorges and waterways

The Panta Vrechi Gorge between Roska and Doliana is considered a landmark of Evritania and attracts visitors from Greece and abroad. River trekking is possible in the gorge. You can drive to a certain point, after which access is by river trekking. This makes the type of access an important distinction from an outing that involves simply walking a route. Canyoning is also possible at Halikorema.

For more water-based experiences, consider the Tavropos and Lake Kremasta: rafting is possible on the Tavropos River. At the confluence of Evritania’s rivers lie the Kremasta Dam and the artificial lake of the same name. Visitors can take a water excursion there by canoe, boat or another small watercraft. Nature routes in Evritania also include wetlands along the Agrafiotis, Tavropos and Karpenisiotis rivers, as well as at Lake Kremasta. This lets you shape your travel plans around rivers, the lake or mountain trails, depending on your interests.

Cultural history and regional specialities

The Cultural and Historical Centre of Evritania combines historical topics with modern ways of presenting them: it features 3D projections, a VR experience about the historic Battle of Kefalovryso, and a 360-degree video tour of the Episkopi Chapel. A replica of the mosaic from the early Christian Basilica of Agios Leonidis in Klavsi is also on display there. The early Christian Church of Saint Leonidis in Klafsi dates back to the 5th century.

Another glimpse into the region’s history awaits in Koryschades. The Museum of the Greek Resistance is housed in the former village school, where the first National Assembly was held in May 1944. The stone bridge of Agrafa is another historic structure in the region; it is estimated to have been built in the 17th century. The Christian monasteries of Evritania that survive to this day are considered important artistic monuments and nationally significant pilgrimage sites. In the wider region is the Monastery of Panagia Proussiotissa, which is visited by thousands of people from all over Greece. The Folklore Museum in Megalo Chorio is a recommended place to visit.

Local specialities include wild or farmed trout from Lake Kremasta, which visitors can try. Nature, activities and culture can therefore be combined with an interest in local food, without limiting your holiday to just one type of outing.
