Culture and history

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is home to a rural scythe and steel works dating from the 18th century. The site houses the last fully preserved crucible steel furnace in the United Kingdom; visitors can also see the powerful waterwheels that powered Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.

Shepherd Wheel Workshop dates back to the 16th century. The building is designated as a Grade II listed building and is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Visitors can see the working waterwheel and machinery in operation on site.

Sheffield Cathedral – St Peter & St Paul is the oldest building in Sheffield still in daily use. The history of Christianity at this site stretches back more than 1,000 years.

Sheffield General Cemetery lies west of the city centre and is a six-hectare parkland area. It features monumental tombs, winding paths and buildings in the Neoclassical and Egyptian Revival styles. Gardens and green spaces

Sheffield Botanical Gardens opened in 1836 and cover 19 acres. English Heritage has designated them as a Grade II site of special historic and architectural interest. Plants from the temperate regions of the world grow in the Glass Pavilion.

Ecclesall Woods is the largest ancient semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire and offers numerous paths to explore. The Winter Garden adds a greenhouse to the city’s green spaces: it is one of the largest temperate greenhouses built in the United Kingdom over the past hundred years and showcases more than 2,500 plants from around the world.

Museums and collections

Weston Park Museum tells the story of Sheffield and its people from prehistory to the present day. Its holdings include archaeological treasures and zoological exhibits.

The Millennium Gallery presents national and international art and design alongside regional creative work. It is also home to the unique Ruskin Collection of the Guild of St George. The Graves Gallery has housed Sheffield’s visual art collection since 1934 and is located on the third floor of Sheffield Central Library.

The National Emergency Services Museum is housed in a combined police, fire and ambulance station dating from 1898. Kelham Island Museum is located on one of Sheffield’s oldest industrial sites. The site was established in the 1180s, when a mill race diverted water from the River Don to the Town Corn Mill near Lady’s Bridge.
