Holiday apartment in South Yorkshire: Nature, lakes and industrial heritage

South Yorkshire combines impressive reminders of industrial history with wetlands, lakes, castles and varied paths. Kelham Island Museum is home to the 425-tonne, 12,000-horsepower River Don Engine. Conisbrough Castle is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in South Yorkshire and features a distinctive large tower dating from the late 12th century. There are also extensive natural and recreational attractions where the region reveals a completely different side.

Nature

Potteric Carr is a wetland nature reserve with bitterns, marsh harriers, a diverse mosaic of habitats and impressive viewpoints. Winding woodland paths and networks of ponds lie alongside reedbeds and other wetland habitats. The biodiversity is also reflected in the recorded breeding birds: more than 230 bird species have been recorded at Potteric Carr; 102 species have bred there, and more than 65 species breed there every year.

RSPB Old Moor also combines natural surroundings with purpose-built play areas. A traditional adventure playground is complemented by nature-based play features, including a sandpit, water play, wobbly bridges and a play tower. The Trans Pennine Trail runs along the southern edge of RSPB Old Moor. Access to the reserve is via a bridge to the car park, while bicycle racks are available in the courtyard.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a walk-through wildlife attraction in South Yorkshire on the outskirts of Doncaster, where conservation plays a central role. The park participates in ex-situ breeding programmes for endangered species managed by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. The site includes six indoor and outdoor play areas, which are included in the admission price.

Water and paths

Rother Valley Country Park is situated around three large lakes and offers water sports and leisure activities such as an aqua park, cable skiing, sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and mountain biking. There are suitable cycle routes for different ability levels; flat walks and paths also run along the lake. The activity centre on the main lake hires out sailing boats, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedal boats and rowing boats, and offers lessons and courses.

Cyclists can use South Yorkshire By Bike, a 250 km route that visits all parts of South Yorkshire. The route was planned to use traffic-free paths, segregated cycleways and quiet roads as often as possible. South Yorkshire By Bike also includes nine shorter, accessible and family-friendly routes. The canal path at Elsecar is also part of the Trans Pennine Trail and can be used on foot or by bicycle.

Culture

Wentworth Woodhouse offers self-guided tours of the grand rooms and gardens. The gardens include wildflower meadows, ancient trees, shady woodland groves and 18th-century gatehouses. Guided tours provide access to rarely accessible areas, hidden stories and the history of the house and gardens.

Brodsworth Hall is a country house preserved in the condition in which it was found after the death of its last owner in 1988. Changing exhibitions and volunteer room guides bring the history of Brodsworth Hall to life. The history of Elsecar is presented at Elsecar Heritage Centre, where guided tours can be booked. Elsecar is also home to the Newcomen Beam Engine, the only atmospheric engine by Thomas Newcomen still preserved at its original location anywhere in the world.

South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is located on the former site of RAF Doncaster. Its extensive collection ranges from the beginnings of flight to modern jet aircraft. The National Emergency Services Museum is housed in England’s first purpose-built combined police, fire and ambulance station. It covers three floors, ten exhibitions and around 30 vehicles. Visitors can see a 45-foot-long RNLI lifeboat, climb into historic vehicles and try on uniforms.

Industry and technology

Kelham Island Museum tells the story of industrial manufacturing in Sheffield: from master craftsmen and mass production through the Industrial Revolution to the Women of Steel. Magna Science Adventure Centre offers another insight into the industrial past. It is located in the former Templeborough Steelworks and houses one of the original electric arc furnaces that shaped steel production there. Shop-floor tours led by former steelworkers offer the opportunity to see an authentic electric arc furnace and artefacts from steel production.
