Doncaster combines an immersive wildlife experience on the outskirts of the town with castles, museums, markets and extensive trails. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is located on the outskirts of Doncaster and places conservation at the heart of its work. Ranger talks and live shows are part of the offering, as is Pangea, a prehistoric dinosaur experience featuring more than 30 life-sized dinosaurs.

Nature

At the Potteric Carr Nature Reserve, reedbeds, woodland paths and ponds alternate. Birdwatching and the “Forest Tots” programme are available there. The area also includes a visitor centre serving hot drinks and a gift shop. Thus, within one nature reserve, visitors will find both different landscape features and specific amenities for their time in the reserve.

Culture and history

At Conisbrough Castle, visitors can climb to the top of the keep and enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. In Doncaster, the Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is free to enter. Its Rail Heritage Centre displays artefacts from the Doncaster Grammar School Rail Heritage Collection, as well as two locomotives on loan from the National Railway Museum. The Danum Gallery, Library and Museum also houses the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Regimental Museum.

The Cusworth Hall also combines architectural history and a museum: the building is listed and has Grade I status; at the same time, it houses Heritage Doncaster’s social history museum. Various walking trails through the park begin at Cusworth Hall’s reception. At St George Minster, visitors can see an 18-metre section of a Roman wall. Doncaster’s Mansion House is one of only three surviving Mansion Houses in the United Kingdom; the other two are in London and York. At Doncaster Racecourse, the St Leger Festival gives the racecourse national and international recognition.

Leisure

The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum displays an extensive collection of aircraft and helicopters from the early years of aviation to the present day. Cockpits and interactive exhibits are open there all year round; the museum is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. The Doncaster Dome has a water world with seven pools. It is also home to the only ice rink in the United Kingdom with split levels and two ice surfaces connected by ramps. The Cast Theatre presents comedy, concerts, drama, ballet, jazz and family performances.

Trails and transport

The Trans Pennine Trail runs for 25 miles through Doncaster. Its section through Doncaster follows riverbanks, canal paths and disused railway lines. In addition, Doncaster has numerous walking routes suitable for all age groups and ability levels. The local railway stations in Doncaster provide access to the towns, villages and attractions on the outskirts of Doncaster. On race days, a shuttle bus runs between Doncaster Racecourse and Doncaster Interchange.

Local life

The origins of Doncaster Market date back to Roman times. Today, the market comprises four large covered market halls surrounded by extensive outdoor markets. Alongside the historic buildings and collections, this makes a market with a long history of development a distinct part of the townscape.
