Rotherham – Culture, Parks and Holiday Apartments

The Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham encompasses not only the minster town of Rotherham, but also smaller towns, attractive villages and hilly or gently rolling countryside across a further 100 square miles. Cultural sites, nature experiences and places to visit are therefore among the defining themes of the destination area.

Culture and History

A particularly rare surviving testimony is the Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge. It is one of only four surviving medieval bridge chapels in the country. Clifton Park Museum conveys Rotherham’s rich history. Boston Castle also combines historical content with interactive elements: the small visitor attraction offers information and exhibitions about the history of the castle, an interactive touchscreen, as well as costumes and games for children. On request, access is also available to a roof terrace with extensive views over Rotherham and Sheffield.

The industrial past is immediately present at Magna. Magna is located in the former Templeborough Steelworks and houses one of the original electric arc furnaces that drove steel production in the late 20th century. At the Magna Science Adventure Centre, interactive hands-on exhibitions complement the offering. They are spread across four pavilions covering the themes of air, earth, fire and water. A shop-floor tour with former steelworkers leads to an authentic electric arc furnace and to artefacts from steel production that visitors can see there.

Landscape and Nature

Roche Abbey combines historic architecture with a striking landscape. The site preserves extensive ruins of a Cistercian abbey in a dramatic limestone valley. The early Gothic transept arms form part of a Georgian landscape designed by Capability Brown. The grounds of Roche Abbey are also a Site of Special Scientific Interest with wildlife, four waterfalls and a stream. A public footpath runs alongside the abbey. In the immediate vicinity of Rotherham, Roche Abbey is also regarded as an ancient site and a designated historic site.

Further designated landscape features are also located in the immediate vicinity of Rotherham: Laughton en le Morthen Castle Hill is classified as a castle, while Carr Hill, Foredoles Head and Castle Hill are classified as hills. Conisbrough Castle and Mexborough Castle Hill are also located around Rotherham as designated landscape features in the castle category. Don Island is recorded there as a designated landscape formation in the island category.

Parks and Water

Clifton Park combines gardens with a free playground, a water-play area, mini-golf, a park railway and a fun park. The park can be reached via local walking and cycling routes around Rotherham. At Ulley Country Park, walking trails, cycling, fishing, sailing, and bird and wildlife watching are all available; there is also a path around the reservoir.

Rother Valley Country Park caters to different requirements with cycling routes for all ability levels. Flat walking paths and hiking trails run along the lakeshore. On the main lake, visitors can sail and use stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedal boats and rowing boats.

Experiences and Routes

Wentworth Woodhouse offers guided tours of the stately home, as well as a self-guided route through the state rooms and gardens. Regular bus services are available for travel to the village of Wentworth. Connecting services run from the railway stations in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster; changing may be required for the onward journey to the village.
