Swansea combines the coastal landscape of Gower with historic sites, museums, walking routes and regional cuisine. Rhossili Bay has a three-mile-long sandy beach. Along one of the most famous cliffs in Wales, there are views of the golden sands of Rhossili and the rugged limestone cliffs of the south coast of Gower. Near Rhossili, an example of medieval strip farming has also been preserved because of its archaeological value and importance for wildlife. In May 1956, Gower was declared the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Great Britain.

Coast and landscape

The Gower Coast Path passes wide beaches, dramatic cliffs, salt marshes and sand dunes, offering opportunities to observe nature along the route. The Wales Coast Path through Gower includes dramatic cliffs and bays in the south as well as quieter salt marshes in the north. The Gower Coast Path offers coastal walks ranging from easy to challenging. Coastal activities such as coasteering and stand-up paddleboarding are also available in Gower.

Weobley Castle also offers views across the landscape: the fortified manor house overlooks marshland, mudflats and the Llwchwr Estuary on the coast of Gower. At low tide, the wreck of the Helvetia, which sank in 1887, can be seen from Rhossili Bay. Gower Coast Adventures offers interactive tours along the south coast of Gower focusing on the local wildlife.

History and culture

Weobley Castle is a fortified manor house built in several phases by the de la Bere family, stewards of the Lords of Gower. Another testament to the past is Parc le Breos, one of the best-preserved Neolithic chambered tombs in this part of Wales. Parc le Breos Chambered Tomb is open year-round in sufficient daylight; a small Forestry Commission car park is located 250 metres away.

The surviving remains of Swansea Castle date from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Swansea Castle can be visited in Castle Square Gardens in Swansea city centre. The National Waterfront Museum tells the story of industry and innovation in Wales – from the present day and over the past 300 years. The Dylan Thomas Centre houses the permanent exhibition “Man and Myth”.

Several walks connect these cultural sites with the cityscape. The Swansea Culture Trail is a walk through the city centre that passes several of Swansea’s cultural highlights. The Dylan Thomas Trail in the Maritime Quarter is a gentle, level walk of approximately 1 kilometre. The Gower Heritage Centre is a museum of crafts and rural life and offers guided tours and demonstrations every day.

Routes and activities

From Swansea railway station, visitors can walk along a level, mostly accessible route from the marina around Swansea Bay to Mumbles. An extensive network of local bus routes serves Swansea, Mumbles and Gower.

Regional cuisine

Swansea Market is Wales’ largest indoor market and offers a wide selection of fresh regional produce all year round. Gower is associated with cockles and laverbread, two traditional Welsh specialities. Laver is harvested along the coast, while cockles come from the sandy estuary near Penclawdd.
