Neath Port Talbot lies between Cardiff and Swansea. Here, the urban east meets rural West Wales; the region includes museums, cycle paths, sandy beaches and adventure activities, among other attractions. Nature experiences, paths through woodland and coastal landscapes, and reminders of Welsh history come together here.

Nature and trails

The Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre is the main starting point for walking and mountain biking trails in Afan Forest Park. The mountain biking trails range from easy routes for families and beginners to routes for experienced riders. There is also a skills park for less experienced riders. The Gyfylchi Ridgetop Trail leads through woodland areas up to the ridge and passes the ruins of Nant-y-bar Farm and the 18th-century Gyfylchi Chapel.

Gnoll Country Park also combines exercise and scenery with walking and recreation trails. This network of paths includes a link to the Woodland Trust's Brynau Farm wild area. The park has an accessible two-storey visitor centre. Margam Country Park also has walking and cycling trails; it additionally includes a historic castle and its parkland.

The Wales Coast Path passes through Neath Port Talbot in two sections. A seven-mile section of coastal path in Neath Port Talbot offers views across the Bristol Channel. Route 887 of the Sustrans National Cycle Network leads to Afan Forest Park.

Nature

Aberdulais Waterfall is located in Neath Port Talbot. It is a refuge for wildlife and native plants; Daubenton's bats, dippers, grey wagtails and herons, among other species, can be observed there. Cefnmawr, a landscape feature classified as a mountain, is located in the vicinity of Neath Port Talbot. Nearby is Cefn Morfudd, a landscape feature classified as a hill.

Further afield in the region are Henrhyd Waterfall, a landscape feature classified as a waterfall, and the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, a landscape feature classified as a cave. Thus, the region's range of landscapes extends beyond the paths and waterfalls of Neath Port Talbot to other natural features in the area.

Culture and history

The ruins of Neath Abbey are among the most significant monastic remains in South Wales. At Neath Abbey, a small car park with space for approximately four cars is located about 30 metres from the entrance to the monument. Neath Castle, a structure classified as a castle, is also located in the vicinity of Neath Port Talbot. Cwm Clais, Glyn Castle and Plas Baglan are located in the surrounding area; each is classified as a castle structure.

The Aberdulais waterwheel is Europe's largest overshot waterwheel generating electricity. The water in the Dulais Valley was a driving force behind industrial development for more than 400 years. The Margam Stones Museum provides another historical connection, as it is associated with one of the earliest church schools in Wales.
