Archaeology at Opfermoor
Since 1991, places of worship and parts of a nearby Germanic settlement dating from the 3rd century AD have been reconstructed at Opfermoor Vogtei. The work is based on excavations by Prof. Behm-Blancke. Visitors can see reconstructed settlement houses on the site. The “Opfermoor” exhibition building displays numerous shrines discovered during excavations carried out over several years; the small museum exhibits original finds from excavations of the settlement and cult site. The long timespan also makes the site archaeologically interesting: finds and offerings from the area around Opfermoor date back to 600 BC and span about 1,000 years. Reconstructions, exhibits and original finds offer different ways to explore the subject. Guided group visits to Opfermoor are limited to a maximum of 25 people. If you are planning a guided group visit, this limit is an important factor.
Village history and cycling in Oberdorla
In Oberdorla, the Romanesque collegiate church of St Peter and Paul provides another historical highlight. Two heavily weathered yet impressive depictions of apostles can be seen at its portal. The Oberdorla local history room presents an exhibition on village life, local and church history, and Vogtland customs. Alongside the archaeological themes of Opfermoor, visitors can also learn about the history and traditions of a village in Vogtei.
