Rose Garden and Botanical Garden

The Rose Garden displays almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 m². It also features a collection of roses from Bad Langensalza. The garden’s size and the variety of its roses reveal two distinct aspects: the scale of the site and the breadth of its plant collection.

The Rose Garden is also connected with local rose breeding. Between 1950 and 1990, 91 rose varieties were bred there. Anni Berger, Germany’s only rose breeder, worked in Bad Langensalza. In 2002, the town received the title “Rose City”—a dated award that gives roses a firm place in the town’s history.

A different plant world awaits at the Botanical Garden, which has a collection of rare cacti and yuccas from South America. This gives the garden a focus distinct from that of the rose collection. A visit to the Botanical Garden can end with a walk through the Kneipp foot bath.

The Town’s Buildings and Museums

Dryburg Castle is the town’s oldest surviving secular building constructed entirely of stone. “Secular building” means a non-religious building. Bad Langensalza is in the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination; the Unstrut-Hainich district is part of the Wartburg Hainich World Heritage Region. The treetop path offers a nature experience from above: visitors stroll 24 metres above the Hainich canopy, and from the treehouse the view extends across Hainich National Park. Those with a head for heights can climb the tree tower to a platform 40 metres above the ground. From there, the view stretches across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin.

The treetop path starts 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. The centre has a large hiking car park, a food and drink outlet, toilets and a local public transport bus stop. As operational information can change, it is worth checking these facilities again before your visit.

Mühlhausen also offers its own cultural and historical highlights within the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination. The town has eleven medieval churches and a surviving inner town wall with numerous defensive towers. To this day, 2.2 kilometres of Mühlhausen’s oldest, inner town wall remain. The 34.2-metre-high viewing platform on Raven Tower offers panoramic views over Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The highlights are distinct: Bad Langensalza focuses on roses, plants and individual museums, while Mühlhausen adds churches and town fortifications to the mix.
