The large, grass-covered village green forms the centre of Sundhausen. Lime trees and chestnut trees alternate around it. Both the open green space and the alternating sequence of trees shape the heart of the village.

The Sundhausen municipal events calendar includes a Pentecost festival with the raising of a maypole, a traditional Easter bonfire and a Christmas market. The treetop path runs 24 metres above the canopy of the Hainich forest; from the treehouse, you can look out over Hainich National Park. The different heights and viewing distances offer a practical way to choose between a forest perspective and a broader panorama.

The treetop path begins 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. There is a large hiking car park, a dining establishment, toilets and a local public transport bus stop at the centre. The National Park Centre exhibition uses films, large-format image walls, interactive experience stations and other interactive elements. The centre also offers a fully accessible media guide; tablets and headphones can be borrowed. The adventure railbike offers a different perspective on the landscape: Route 1 crosses the Lengenfeld Viaduct, with its eight arches. The structure is 244 metres long and 24 metres high. As route availability should be checked, it is advisable to consult the operator’s current information before travelling.

The Betteleichenweg trail in the national park passes cultural and historical sites such as the Ihlefelder Cross, the Iron Hand and Ihlefeld. In spring, it runs through flowering wild garlic and corydalis. This route brings historical sites together with a distinctly seasonal impression of nature.

Mühlhausen focuses on medieval urban history. A 2.2-kilometre section of the inner, oldest city wall remains; the inner city wall ring has numerous defensive towers. There are also eleven medieval churches. The viewing platform of the Rabenturm is 34.2 metres high and offers panoramic views over Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The wall, towers, churches and views each offer a different perspective, while the city’s history extends beyond any single building.

Museums also add variety to the wider destination’s themes: the Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal presents the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across 276 square metres. The small museum at Opfermoor Vogtei displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and cult site. The Ropemaker Museum preserves a landmark of Schlotheim’s traditional ropemaking craft in a faithfully recreated spinning workshop.

Garden landscapes add to the options in Bad Langensalza. The Rose Garden presents almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 square metres. Rare cacti and yuccas from South America can be viewed in the Botanical Garden.
