City Wall, Erfurt Gate, and Dreyse House
Thanks to regular restoration and renovation work, Sömmerda’s city wall is well preserved. Of its gates, only Erfurt Gate has survived. According to historical records, the gate, which is now a listed monument, was built in 1395 as an entrance to the town, alongside the existing fortifications. It was one of the first of five town gates in the city wall, which was expanded from 1589 onward. This building history makes Erfurt Gate a specific point of reference if you are interested in the development of the fortifications.
The Dreyse House offers another facet of the town’s history: after almost three years of renovation, it opened on Open Monument Day in 2005 as a history and technology museum and library. The city wall and the Dreyse House thus highlight different aspects of history, from architectural fortifications to the opening of a museum and library.
Remembrance and Industrial History
The memorial and educational site “Tor 8” was officially opened on January 27, 2025. It commemorates 1,300 Jewish women prisoners who were detained from September 1944 to April 1945 at the Sömmerda subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp and forced to perform labor at the local Rheinmetall-Borsig AG plant. The period, place of detention, and forced labor are inseparable parts of this historical subject. The site therefore provides a solemn focus, clearly distinct from the festivals and architectural history of the town.

Town Festival and Waid Milling Tradition
The Sömmerda Town Festival takes place every year in June in the town center. The program includes dance performances, live music, shows, and children’s entertainment. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates and program for that year’s event. The activities listed give an impression of the variety on offer, but you should not assume the same program is held every year.
Another occasion brings visitors to the Waid Mill in Rohrborn, a district of Sömmerda: on the annual Mill Day at Pentecost and at the Waid Mill Festival in August, Waid is milled there as it was in the past, and visitors can learn about the old tradition. While the town festival combines a range of stages and entertainment, the mill events focus on milling and passing on traditional knowledge. It is also advisable to check the current dates for these events in advance.
Getting Around the Town Center
The Sömmerda Tourist Information Office is located on the market square in the town center, directly opposite the historic town hall. As a guide for getting there and to the center, it is about a ten-minute walk from the train station and about a five-minute walk from the bus station. These routes follow Bahnhofstraße and Weißenseer Straße, respectively. The two times provide a concrete comparison for getting there; they are approximate walking times. The Tourist Information Office can also be reached directly by bicycle via the Unstrut Cycle Route. If you are planning to cycle, check the route conditions before setting out.
