It was one of the first of five town gates in the town wall, expanded from 1589, which has been well preserved thanks to continuous restoration and renovation work.
The Historical and Technical Museum in Sömmerda traces the town’s 200-year industrial development, from the founding of the Dreysesche Gewehrfabrik (Dreyse rifle factory), through the Rheinmetall production sites, to the office machine factory in the former GDR. The Waid Mill in Rohrborn, a district of Sömmerda, offers another way to explore regional history; it has been restored to its original condition. At the annual Mill Day on Whit Monday and the Waid Mill Festival in August, woad is milled there as it was in the past, and visitors can learn about the old tradition. Sömmerda also offers a range of holiday-planning themes beyond urban history. The Bilzingsleben Steinrinne is a former travertine quarry in the Sömmerda district. Around 370,000 years ago, it was a campsite for Homo erectus bilzingslebenensis. The Time Travel Trail connects the “Leubinger Fürstenhügel” rest area on the A 71 with the Leubingen princely burial mound, presenting historical, archaeological and geographical connections through its exhibition and stops.
At Lake Alperstedt in the Sömmerda district, visitors can camp, swim, sail, surf, paddle, relax and eat. The 66-hectare lake is connected to Central Thuringia’s long-distance and regional cycle route network; from there, excursions to places such as Erfurt, Sömmerda or Weimar are possible. The combination of water activities and cycling connections offers a different regional focus from the historic sites and museums.
