Forest trails and sweeping views

Hiking trails in the wooded area around Remptendorf lead to viewpoints with far-reaching views over the mountains and valleys of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Along the way, attentive hikers can also discover boundary stones from times gone by. This brings together expansive landscapes and a historical element of discovery: the viewpoints draw your gaze across the mountains, while the boundary stones invite you to look out for traces of earlier times.

The Ziemestal Bridge: a steel viaduct with a history

The Ziemestal Bridge officially belongs to the municipality of Remptendorf and is a viaduct on the Triptis–Marxgrün railway line in Thuringia. The single-track structure is made entirely of steel, is 115 metres long and 32 metres high, and was built between 1893 and 1895. The bridge’s specific engineering features are thus combined with a clearly defined history of construction—a different focus from the landscape experiences offered by the hiking trails.

The current access restriction is important for your planning: unauthorised persons are generally prohibited from climbing or entering the Ziemestal Bridge and the railway line. The bridge therefore cannot be planned as a freely accessible route.

Gahma: a fortified church, park and minerals

Gahma’s fortified church is a protected historic monument and is believed to date from the 12th century. A park there invites you to take a stroll. Gahma is also home to a shop selling minerals, healing stones and jewellery, with an adjoining mineral museum. Fortified architecture, a walk in green surroundings and the world of minerals offer different highlights within the destination.

Saale-Orla as a broader travel region

If your trip also takes in the wider Saale-Orla destination, you can explore additional landscapes and cultural attractions. Together with the Saale Cascade, which is around 80 kilometres long and has five dams, the River Saale forms Europe’s largest contiguous reservoir area, known as the Thuringian Sea. Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir.

Burgk Castle Museum has historic living quarters and exhibition rooms featuring valuable interiors, as well as collections and exhibitions. Its bookplate collection comprises more than 200,000 prints and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. Concerts and festivals are also held there. In Wurzbach, more than 120 kilometres of signposted hiking trails invite you to explore the low mountain landscape. Wurzbach is also home to the Heinrichshütte foundry, which has Europe’s largest and most powerful steam engine. As an interactive, hands-on museum, Heinrichshütte welcomes families with children as well as children from nurseries and schools.

If you would like to explore Remptendorf’s local structure further, the subordinate villages of Burglemnitz and Gleima are also part of the municipality.
