Arnstadt tells its history in a variety of places: through connections to Bach in the market square and former residences, a richly decorated town hall façade, a palace museum and the prehistoric Alteburg on the southern edge of town. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether you are particularly interested in music history, historic buildings, insights into past ways of life or the history of settlement.

Bach and the city’s architectural history

In Arnstadt’s market square, the Bach monument depicts Johann Sebastian Bach as a young man, leaning casually against a milestone. The same place offers a different perspective on the city’s history: the Renaissance town hall was built from 1582 to 1586. Its façade fills the north side of the market square and is adorned with ornamental gables and numerous decorative elements. The monument and the town hall thus represent two different themes: the remembrance of a musician and the city’s imposing architecture.

Bach’s time in Arnstadt can also be dated precisely. In August 1703, Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed organist at the New Church, where he remained until 1707. The house at Kohlgasse 7 was an important former residence of the Bach family of musicians. The historic townscape also includes the Jakobsturm, which belonged to the former St. James’s Church. The historic Way of St. James ran through the town.

The Upper Church, also known as the Barefoot Church, was built around 1250 and was formerly the monastery church of the Franciscan order. Inside are a wooden barrel vault, an organ gallery dating from 1624 and two galleries on the south wall from the mid-17th century. These details give the church its own architectural-historical perspective, spanning from its medieval origins to later changes to the interior.

Museum, tower and early settlement

At the Palace Museum in the New Palace, visitors can see furniture and art treasures from the former princely collection in reconstructed Baroque rooms on the southern piano nobile. On the ground floor of the southern corps de logis is the “Mon plaisir” doll city, where visitors can walk through its houses and rooms. A visit to a doll city offers a different scale from the rooms of the palace and gives families another specific place to explore.

A distinctive structure is the original, preserved palace tower. It is 65 metres high and has a copper-clad cupola and a copper-clad spire. It underwent extensive restoration in 1998/99. Its height and the two copper-clad elements are defining features of the tower; its restoration is part of its more recent history.

The Alteburg, on the southern edge of Arnstadt, takes visitors far back beyond the history of the town. A fortified prehistoric hilltop settlement stood on a shell-limestone plateau, with steep slopes falling away on three sides. The Alteburg was settled during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Ramparts and ditches served as fortifications. Two ramparts and the remains of an outer rampart have survived. Those interested in early settlement and fortifications will find a different focus here from that of the town hall, church or museum.

Different interests for your trip

For families, the “Mon plaisir” doll city and the children’s playground at Arnstadt’s Fasanerie Animal Park can offer different ideas for things to do: the doll city features houses and rooms in miniature, while the animal park has a playground. These are specific options for a trip that might include a visit with children as well as architecture and history, without all the experiences needing to be alike.

For 2026, Arnstadt announced a total of 200 city tours, including around 30 special themed tours. The announced figure therefore covers both city tours overall and a smaller group of special themed tours. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Arnstadt, you can use your travel interests as a starting point for your choice: Bach and architectural history, the museum and doll city, or the prehistoric Alteburg each offer a different focus.
