The two Nuremberg references therefore tell different stories: the nickname is explained by the weavers, while the trade route refers to a historic transport route through the village. Ölschröte adds a history of former uses to the story of the village. For many years, it served as an inn and a children’s holiday camp. The Nature Park Trail also descends to the Ölschröte Forest Estate. Landscape and Architectural History in Großbreitenbach
Within the wider destination of Großbreitenbach, the town lies on a plateau between Langer Berg, the Schwarza Valley and the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail. Großbreitenbach is a state-recognized health resort, located around 50 kilometers south of Erfurt and about 15 kilometers southeast of Ilmenau. The Church of St. Trinity in Großbreitenbach also offers a striking insight into the architectural history of the wider destination. With 600 seats, it is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia. It was built from 1679 as a replacement for the dilapidated St. John’s Church, which had been built in 1570 and collapsed in 1771, leaving only its tower standing. The Church of St. Trinity was designed by Andreas Rudolphi, state architect of Saxe-Gotha, and consecrated in 1690. It is entirely clad in slate, and a distinctive hexagonal roof turret sits on the steep roof of the broad nave. The wooden baptismal stand dates from 1677 and was transferred from the old St. John’s Church.
