Local History and Theatre

The Bienstädt local history room is located in the former village shop. Its collection includes historical objects, documents, photographs, books and items of clothing dating from around 1900 to 1970. They document life, farm and household work, as well as the work of long-established trades and founded associations. Everyday life, work and the history of local associations are presented side by side; the collection offers several perspectives on life in the village. This gives your travel plans a distinct cultural focus that goes beyond a single craft or type of object.

The Bienstädt local history association’s theatre group rehearses and performs plays every year. Alongside the historical collection, there is therefore a recurring programme of stage performances. If you would like to include a performance in your stay, check local notices for specific dates.

Routes across the Heights

A report on the opening of the route in 2012 describes the Bienstädt Path as connecting Bienstädt with the Friemar reservoir and linking up with the Nesse Valley Cycle Route in the direction of the Fahner Heights. The report also places the path within a regional network of routes around the Nesse Valley Cycle Route. Historical cultural trails run along the open ridge path across the Bienstädt Heights towards the Thuringian Forest. The Bienstädt Watchtower Nearby

The Bienstädt Watchtower is located about one kilometre northwest of Bienstädt. Since the late Middle Ages, it formed part of Erfurt’s outer fortification system. The ruin, now a protected historic monument, was also known as the Uffhusen Watchtower. Its tower has a square ground plan with sides measuring 4.65 metres and still stands about six metres high. Its historical context and precise measurements describe two aspects of the structure: its former role in Erfurt’s fortification system and the shape of the surviving tower.

Gotha as a Wider Travel Destination

As a wider travel destination, Gotha offers its own regional setting, distinct from Bienstädt’s local character. Friedenstein Palace in Gotha is a prominent landmark and part of the coat of arms of the Gotha district. The district extends south to the Rennsteig and west to the 916.5-metre-high Großer Inselsberg. At the Marienglashöhle cave near Friedrichroda, a 110-metre-long tunnel passes geological windows that reveal rock layers millions of years old. In the Crystal Grotto, gypsum crystals up to 90 centimetres long sparkle.

Gotha also has its own highlights in theatre history: Ekhof Theatre was founded in 1775 by Duke Ernst II as Germany’s first court theatre. Another cultural stop in the wider destination is the Bach family home in Wechmar, where models of the original sites associated with the Bach family in Wechmar can be seen.
