Culture and History

Dingelstädt is one of the oldest settlements documented in records in the Eichsfeld and was already mentioned in the 9th century. Historically, the town served as a court venue, a rest stop for travelers, a market town, and a post station. The townscape features a group of visible historic buildings, including the Große Mühle from 1591, a Renaissance-style town hall, and the neo-Gothic St. Gertrudis Church from the 19th century.

The pilgrimage church of Maria im Busch is one of Dingelstädt’s oldest churches, was first documented in 1424, and houses a wooden devotional image from the 15th century. Maria im Busch is also associated with an annual hobbyhorse tradition on Easter Monday, during which preschool children walk around the church with decorated hobbyhorses.

Landscape

Dingelstädt is part of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park and is located in an area of expansive landscapes and gentle hills with viewpoints. At the same time, Dingelstädt is a destination for walks and hikes through a landscape of hills and green valleys.

The Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Trail reaches Dingelstädt; the route from Heiligenstadt to Dingelstädt is listed as a stage. Dingelstädt also has connections to surrounding tourist cycling routes.
