Town Festival, Traditions and Architectural History

The Breikuchen Festival has been celebrated every summer as a town festival since 2001. The programme includes traditional events organised by town associations, shows, music events and culinary offerings. It brings together a range of festival themes and provides a seasonal counterpoint to the historic buildings, which can be explored independently of the festival.

A special tradition in Dingelstädt is the annual hobbyhorse ride around St. Mary's Church on Easter Monday. Preschool children ride wooden horses decorated with little bells and colourful ribbons. The custom links a fixed date in the annual calendar with a colourful scene from local life.

Today's St. Gertrude's Parish Church was consecrated in 1855 as a three-aisled Gothic-style church. The history of the church site goes back further: the first church on this plot is mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century, although its year of construction is unknown. St. Gertrude's is the third known church on the site. Here, a clear architectural description meets a history with uncertain early beginnings.

Smaller architectural details also shape the character of Dingelstädt. The Mühlengehöft at Mühlhäuser Straße 11 has a fine Renaissance building and an elaborately decorated portal. The pilgrimage church “Maria im Busch” takes its name from a slope that was once covered with bushes. The Cannon Railway Cycle Path is considered easy to ride and runs for approximately 32 kilometres from Dingelstädt to Frieda in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse. The route passes through six tunnels and over four bridges. Its approximate length and course give cyclists concrete guidance for planning their own tour, while the tunnels and bridges help define the route's character.

In Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the Eichsfeld Museum in the Baroque Jesuit College presents the region's history, culture, religious life and folklore across three floors. Bodenstein Castle offers another historical attraction: first mentioned in documents in 1098, it stands on a mountain spur of the Ohm Mountains. Regular guided tours cover the history of the former lords of the castle, the Wintzingerode family; visitors can also see the small chapel with its baptismal angel.
