Grabau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Cycling and Trails
The BahnRadWeg Route A is a 27-kilometre cycle route from Bad Oldesloe via Grabau to Henstedt-Ulzburg. Through Grabau, Route A runs between Bad Oldesloe and Henstedt-Ulzburg.
Route A follows the former railway corridor of Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG. Rail traffic was discontinued in 1973; the corridor was later converted into a cycle path. The route ends near Henstedt-Ulzburg railway station, where connecting train services to Hamburg are available.
Nature
A regional cycling tour leads through the Grabauer Forst recreational forest to Lake Grabau.
A network of forest paths runs around Naturerlebnis Grabau. Naturerlebnis Grabau is freely accessible and allows independent visitors to explore a forest with an educational trail, forest playground and low ropes course; the site can be reached directly via BahnRadWeg A.
The forest educational trail at Naturerlebnis Grabau includes stations on forestry, an alder carr, sound and birdwatching, as well as a barefoot trail and bat and woodpecker trees.
Along the historic railway line near Grabau, the fruit-tree and woody-plant educational trail features more than 160 standard fruit trees with labelled apple, pear, cherry and plum varieties. Along the route, visitors can sample the varieties seasonally. Hiking trails also run around Grabau Mill Pond.
The Grabau Erratic Boulder Garden on the cycle path contains 30 erratic boulders from the Stormarn district. The erratic boulders originate from geological formations of the last three ice ages; the garden displays almost all rock types found in Scandinavia. Granite and gneiss predominate among the larger stones.
Culture and History
Grabau Estate is a former aristocratic estate with a manor house dating from 1804 and roots in an older Meierhof farm. It is classified as significant in historical, artistic, urban-planning and cultural-landscape terms.
The country estate listed as “Grabau Castle” was built from 1906 to 1908 as a two-storey, castle-like villa in the English country-house style, with elements of English Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau. The estate park is an approximately 12-hectare landscaped park and villa garden with a pond and two thatched pavilions.
Grabau Chapel is a former burial chapel built in 1923/24 in Neo-Gothic forms with influences from late Art Nouveau. It contains a marble figure of the Madonna and Child by the sculptor Stanislaus Cauer from Königsberg.
Grabau Manor House is privately owned, largely vacant and occasionally rented out for film shoots.
