Culture

Official guided tours of the Heidestraße chalk quarry are offered in Lägerdorf. During scheduled group collection events in the quarry, visitors can search for sea urchins and belemnites and take home any finds permitted under the applicable rules. Helmets are mandatory for visits to the Lägerdorf chalk quarries. Quarry visits require prior registration; participants must be at least ten years old.

Lägerdorf Luther Church was built in 1911 according to plans by architect Johann Theede and follows the North German brick architecture tradition. The church houses a restored pneumatic Voelker organ dating from 1912, described as the only surviving organ made by this company in Schleswig-Holstein.

History

Lägerdorf's transformation from a farming village into an industrial town began around 1860 with the arrival of the chalk and cement industries. The Breitenburg Canal was built between 1875 and 1877 to transport peat, chalk, clay and cement. The Lägerdorf Moor Canal stretches for two kilometres from the Breitenburg Canal to the bridge on Rethwischer Straße.

Nature and Trails

The nearby Stör River is suitable for canoe trips and walks. In the nearby Breitenburg Moor, a circular trail leads through the wetland landscape.

The nearby Nordoer Heide nature reserve in the Rethwisch area combines heathland, grassland, water and woodland habitats that provide a home for rare animals. Lägerdorf's characteristic surroundings also include wooded areas. There are marked trails there approximately seven to eight kilometres long, mostly laid out as circular routes and suitable for navigating with a pram.

Surroundings and Getting There

Nearby Breitenburg Castle is one of the most significant secular monuments in Steinburg and was a political and cultural centre of Schleswig-Holstein in the 16th and 17th centuries. The nearby Schloß Breitenburg Golf Club is just a short distance from Lägerdorf and welcomes guests.

Lägerdorf has no direct passenger rail connection. Visitors can take the train to Itzehoe and continue from there by bus.
