Hohenlockstedt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

In Hohenlockstedt, the local history museum is housed in a historic pump house next to the listed water tower. It presents the local history of Hohenlockstedt and the town’s former identity as Lockstedter Lager. The museum also covers the settlement of the former artillery firing range and recalls Hohenlockstedt’s traditional connection with the Finnish Jägers. Built in 1900, the water tower is described as a symbol of Lockstedter Lager. Visitors can climb it and enjoy views of the surrounding Geest landscape from a height of around 18 metres.

Trails and Landscape

The Imperial Training Area Tour is a hiking and cycling route across the former training grounds of Lockstedter Lager. It begins at the museum by the water tower and passes nine historic military training sites, including bunkers. German- and Finnish-language information boards accompany the signposted route. One section follows the Ochsenweg through the Rantzau Valley, which is protected as an FFH area. The renaturalised Rantzau Valley provides a habitat for many rare animal and plant species.

The Meadows and Forest Tour is around 25 kilometres long and runs mainly along paved roads and quiet streets. It passes through Hohenlockstedt and follows traces of its history.
