St. Laurentius in Munkbrarup was built between 1175 and 1200 as a Romanesque granite ashlar church.
Culture and History
The church has a richly decorated south portal with three columns on each of the stepped jambs. Inside, there is a granite baptismal font made around 1200. It is described as the oldest and most valuable work of art in St. Laurentius.
The Hoffnung windmill preserves its historic mechanism for turning the cap into the wind. Inside, three sets of millstones and a groat stone have been preserved. Readings and exhibitions take place there in summer; guided tours of the mill, the local people and the surrounding countryside are also offered.
Routes
Four named cycle routes in Munkbrarup are documented; they range from approximately 20 to 28.5 kilometres. In addition, there are several documented local walking routes: the 4-kilometre Northern Route, the Eastern Route with viewpoints and a shelter in the Autal valley, and the 7-kilometre Southern Route, which passes local historic markers and the village pond.
Water and Coast
The beach and forests of Munkbrarup invite visitors to take walks into the neighbouring municipalities of Glücksburg and Langballigau. In the Munkbrarup district of Bockholmwik, there is a sandy beach on the Flensburg Firth. When wind conditions are suitable, surfing is possible from Bockholmwik.
There is a campsite near the bathing area at Bockholmwik. Parking is also available near the bathing area at Bockholmwik. Dogs are welcome at Bockholmwik's dog beach.
