Langballigholz combines a distinctive Baltic Sea coast with woodland, shallow waters and a diverse cultural landscape. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied vacation will find a range of options here: observing nature, exploring paths on foot or by bike, water-based excursions and historical destinations. This allows travel plans to be tailored to individual interests without limiting the landscape to just one type of holiday.

Steep coast, beach ridge and shallow Baltic Sea waters

The “Höftland Bockholmwik and adjacent steep coasts” nature reserve encompasses the coastal area between Bockholmwik and Langballigholz. The area also includes the adjacent forests on the plateau, offshore beach areas and shallow Baltic Sea waters. Between Bockholmwik and Langballigholz lies the 200- to 400-metre-wide Höftland, which is characterised by a beach ridge system. Two predominantly wooded steep coasts extend between Höftland Bockholmwik and Langballigholz.

The view beneath the water’s surface is also part of the distinctive character of this coastal area: the nature reserve’s 220-hectare shallow-water zone is structured by seagrass meadows, wind-generated tidal flats, sandbanks, reefs, mussel beds and boulder fields. The Langballigau flows into the Baltic Sea at Langballigholz, adding another clearly defined natural area to the landscape. For families and other travel groups, this alternation between woodland, coast and water can be a helpful criterion when choosing accommodation for different interests during the day.

Hiking, cycling and waterways

The circular hiking trail through Langballigholz, Langballigau and Unewatt is designated as a circular hiking trail. Those who like to plan their days on foot can consider this route as a focus of their trip. For a different perspective, there is the Baltic Sea Cycle Route: near Langballigholz, it crosses a valley floor at almost sea level, runs directly beside the road and leads towards Westernhagen. Its specific route therefore offers a contrast to the wooded and coastal surroundings, which cycling travellers can take into account when choosing their base.

The Baltic Sea Coastal Hiking Trail also runs along the water. It is a long-distance canoeing and rowing water trail that passes Langballigholz. Those travelling with different interests can thus distinguish between a land route, a cycling tour and a water trail. When looking for a holiday apartment in Langballigholz, the desired way of spending each day is therefore a particularly sensible starting point: Should the trip be shaped by coastal landscapes, activity, culture or a combination of these?

Culture and regional discoveries

The Erdmann-Holtorf Tower stands on a wooded hill above the summer residence of pianist and composer Eduard Erdmann. It complements the natural attractions with a site connected to the cultural history of Langballigholz. In the wider area, the Unewatt Landscape Museum presents a regional cultural landscape as the Angeln open-air museum village. It is organised around five museum sites, including the Buttermühle, the smokehouse with the transformer house opposite, the Fortuna windmill and the Christesen barn.

Culinary and technological culture can also be incorporated into travel planning. At the historic harbour of Langballigau, fish is traditionally sold directly from the fishing boat. The Steinadler windmill is a cultural monument of particular importance and exceptional value in the history of technology, as the largest surviving gallery Dutch windmill in northern Germany.
