Nature

Around 500 metres south of Böxlund lies the Böxlund oak scrub. The Böxlund section also contains a former gravel pit with a small body of water and open, nutrient-poor areas, some of which are protected biotopes. Access to the nature reserve is prohibited under the protected-area regulations; there are no public paths there. The presence of sand lizards and eagle owls has been documented in the Böxlund oak scrub.

History

Böxlund was first mentioned in documentary records in 1584. The place name is derived from the Danish “Bögslund” and means “beech grove”. Archaeological finds indicate settlement in the Böxlund area during the Neolithic period.

Cycling and Hiking

In the wider area of the Schafflund administrative district, there are numerous cycling and hiking trails with rest areas for longer tours. Historic churches, traditional thatched-roof houses and farm shops are characteristic features there. An 11-kilometre hiking route starting in Medelby takes approximately two hours, passes the Böxlund oak scrub and the gravel pit south of Böxlund, and offers an optional detour to the old gravel pit as a place to rest.

The Border Route is predominantly flat and runs along small paved farm roads as well as, in some sections, separate gravel paths away from motorised traffic. The 130-kilometre Border Route is a cross-border cycling route between Denmark and Germany. Böxlund is listed as one of the settlements along the Border Route.
