Karlsburg Manor House, built in 1721, is considered a building of cultural and historical importance. A protected avenue of lime trees, planted in 1737, leads to the manor house. The two dates refer to different phases in the development of the estate: the manor house itself dates from the early 18th century, while the avenue that shapes the approach was planted several years later.

Nature

Karlsburg Forest is an 186-hectare FFH protected area. It is a near-natural deciduous forest on gently undulating glacial moraine. The forest is dominated by woodruff beech forest; smaller areas consist of oak-hornbeam forest. The calm waters of the Schlei serve numerous endangered bird species as breeding, resting and overwintering areas. The forest area, geological substrate and different forest communities are independent characteristics of the protected area. The Schlei also adds another natural environment: calm waters with seasonally varying functions for birds.

Hiking

The 14.76-kilometre circular hike “Thatched-Roof Idil and Estate Landscape around Winnemark” is rated as moderate. It requires a good basic level of fitness and uses easily walkable paths. The route passes through Karlsburg Forest, which is considered the largest woodland area on the Schwansen peninsula. Open stretches across fields offer views of typical thatched roofs. After the section in Sieseby, the return route runs exclusively along the Schlei shore to Winnemark. The start and finish are at Dorfstraße 3.

The optional detour to Sieseby can be omitted, shortening the hike by about four kilometres. This detour includes a rest area with two wooden benches directly on the Schlei shore. The length, trail character and possible shortcut provide objective points of comparison when planning a day of hiking. Within the same Winnemark route, this means you can distinguish between a complete loop with forest, field and shore sections and a shorter version without the Sieseby detour. The fixed start and finish at Dorfstraße 3 are also details that can be considered separately from the route length when planning your day.

Cycling

The cycling route “Sieseby Back Roads” recommends a detour from Winnemark to the Netzausleger, a large hammock-like structure overlooking the Schlei. From Karlsburg Forest, the route reaches Winnemark via field paths. The SchleiUferTörn uses a gravel path between Sieseby and Winnemark. The different tour types and surfaces can be considered side by side if you would like to plan a day that combines cycling and walking in different ways. This gives the cycling routes different points of reference: one route combines field paths with the Netzausleger, while the SchleiUferTörn follows an expressly mentioned gravel path on the section between Sieseby and Winnemark. The surface is therefore described just as specifically as the respective destinations and connections.

Choosing a Destination

When looking for a holiday apartment in Winnemark, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be considered separately. These details form a separate accommodation framework alongside the different local attractions of hiking, cycling and culture. This keeps the choice of travel dates and accommodation features separate from the question of which of the described tours or places should be the focus.

Culture and Refreshments

Gasthof Victoria is considered accessible and welcomes children and dogs. At Schwonsburg, remains of fortifications believed to date from the late Middle Ages were documented in 1903; their historical significance is not known.
