Discover Hohwacht: Beach, Cliffs and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Hohwacht
Hohwacht combines white sandy beaches with wooded cliffs, offering a wide range of holiday experiences in one place. Between beach walks, observing nature, water sports and cultural discoveries, you can enjoy a varied stay. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus primarily on paths through the landscape, days by the water or special sights.
Experience nature and discover trails
A good starting point for active days is the Hohwachter Bucht nature experience trail. It runs through the municipalities of Hohwacht and Blekendorf and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The circular route is 10 km long and features visitor guidance and informative signs. The nature and experience trail is also aimed at families, children and school classes, providing background information about nature.
Those who prefer to discover the landscape in individual sections will find another option in hiking route W2, “The Lighthouse Loop”. It begins at the car park on Seestraße in Hohwacht and leads west along the promenade, then through the dune landscape or along the beach to Lippe marina. Route W1 from Hohwacht to Weissenhaus Castle starts at the Buchholz car park and leads, among other places, into the Sehlendorfer Binnensee nature reserve.
The Kronswarder nature reserve includes the spit and beach-ridge biotopes between Großer Binnensee, Hohwacht and the Baltic Sea. The crane observation tower in Hohwacht allows cranes to be observed without disturbance. A hiking trail, also accessible to people with disabilities, runs above the 13 m-high cliff along the spa promenade.
Beach, views and water sports
The Hohwachter Flunder is located directly on Hohwacht’s main bathing beach. The sea platform features 370 m² of oak planks and a steel pylon approximately 24 metres high. It is considered a distinctive element of the redesigned promenade and a popular photo opportunity. The Hohwachter Ausguck viewing platform offers another view across the entire bay. It can be reached via the path above the wooded cliffs behind the beach promenade.
Access to the Baltic Sea at Hohwacht beach slopes gently. The sheltered shallow-water area in the protected bay of Alt-Hohwacht offers suitable conditions for first water sports experiences. The surfing and sailing school in Alt-Hohwacht offers courses in all categories. SUPs and kayaks can be rented at the pier. This allows you to alternate between peaceful moments on the beach, your own activities and supervised courses when planning your trip.
The Hohwacht Pirate Camp also adds a special touch. It is home to the large shipwreck “Seetiger”, which can be reached by cable car, bridge or slide. For further sporting variety, Hohwacht golf facility offers a varied 18-hole course, a compact 9-hole course and the modern “Golfodrom”.
Culture, history and special experiences
Historic bathing huts from the 1950s can be viewed in the dunes at the main beach. St. Jürgen Church in Hohwacht also offers a cultural insight. Its interior design, with semicircular rows of benches arranged opposite the open altar area, is suitable for concerts and other events. The votive ship “Norske Loeve” is also located inside the church.
A notable event in local life is the traditional Strandleuchten festival. For more than 15 years, it has welcomed the new year in Hohwacht with a torchlight walk from Alt-Hohwacht along the cliffs and beach to the “Flunder” pier. At World Fish Sandwich Day, participants can submit their participant card, bearing at least three stamps, at the Hohwachter Bucht Touristik stand at the Hohwachter Flunder or in the tourist information office mailbox at Berliner Platz.
The right accommodation for your travel plans
Hohwacht is suitable for different ways of spending a holiday: you can explore nature trails and viewing points, try water sports, see historical highlights or consciously spend individual days on the beach. A holiday apartment in Hohwacht is suited to travel plans where you want to organise your daily routine flexibly between excursions, relaxation and preparing your own meals. The main deciding factor is which experiences are the focus of your trip.
Those who enjoy hiking or cycling can include the nature experience trail and the two signposted routes in their plans. For a holiday centred around the water, the bay of Alt-Hohwacht, the surfing and sailing school and the activities available at the pier are good options. Those interested in culture might combine the church with the historic bathing huts and the Flunder. This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to your personal holiday priorities without every day having to look the same.
