History

Viöl was first recorded in 1275 under the Danish name “Fjolde,” translated as “High Field.” St. Christophorus Church was built on a barren rise in a vast heathland north of Viöl and was an early center of the historic village of Viöl.

The oldest work of art in Viöl’s church is a granite baptismal font from the 13th century; it also has a late Gothic pulpit from the 16th century. Continuous records of its pastors and deacons have been preserved since 1389.

The Christophorus Church was dedicated to Saint Christopher, possibly in connection with a crossing of the Arlau. At the site of the church, the Arlau Valley could be crossed on foot through the water.

Leisure

A skate park has been built in Viöl. The town also has a seasonal swimming pool on Kirchenweg; opening hours are posted at the swimming pool.
