Nature and Landscape

Süderhöft lies between marshland and geest; a bridge over the Treene leads into the Stapelholm countryside.

The wider Eider-Treene-Sorge landscape comprises extensive low-lying grasslands, moors, reed beds, wet meadows and shallow lakes. The wider Eider-Treene-Sorge region is also home to many rare animal and plant species adapted to wetlands.

Near Schwabstedt, storks nest on the church roof and can be observed from a short distance. Also near Schwabstedt, the path to the bell tower offers a view across the Treene towards Friedrichstadt. In the wider surrounding area, the Treene flows through diked marshland and can reach a width of up to 25 metres.

Water

The canoe tour follows the Treene through Hollingstedt and Fresendelf. Paddlers can extend the tour beyond Süderhöft. The Eider-Treene-Sorge canoeing area has numerous rest stops and clear tourist signage; the Treene is described as a family-friendly paddling river.

Near Stapel, there are canoe launch points on both the Eider and the Treene. Near Süderstapel, there are two harbours for cruising yachts. Motorboats are only permitted on the Treene between Friedrichstadt and the old NATO bridge at Süderhöft on the K56.

Paths and Places

In nearby Stapelholm, cyclists and nature lovers can use an established network of paths through wet meadows and gently rolling hills. The Stapelholm Trail is a hiking route approximately 100 kilometres long and follows the Treene through small villages and places of cultural and historical significance.

Near Süderstapel, the natural beach has sports facilities, fishing opportunities and a children's playground.

Culture and History

Near Schwabstedt, the Treenebad offers swimming in the Treene. During the day, St. Jacobi Church opens its richly decorated nave to visitors and also has an ornately carved altar dating from the 16th century.

Near Süderstapel, St. Catherine's Church dates from the 12th century and is visible from the river. Near Schwabstedt, the megalithic tomb dates from the Neolithic period and indicates that people lived in the area around 5,000 years ago.

A local tradition in Süderhöft tells of Meye Muhl: she is said to have been burned as the “Witch of Süderhöft” in Schwabstedt in 1619.
